Project Hailey - Fireworks, Thunder and Wind

Hailey during the storm
Since St. Jean Baptiste Day (June 24th), we have heard fireworks almost every night. (The joys of living in rural Quebec in cottage country)! Hailey has done super with the fireworks. She just goes into our closet and calms down.

July 1st, we had a very severe thunderstorm. Even Zaphod, who rarely seems to notice storms, looked concerned. It was very short lived (about 20 minutes), but it was intense and the house shook. Hailey was unable to calm herself. She went into the crate and tried to dig her way out. When that didn't work, she tried to dig herself into the guest room. As it was evening, we put on her thunder shirt and put her on her leash and she stood under the table where we were playing games.

That night, was a particularly windy night and around 1:30 am she became upset, pacing and growling and barking at the wind. We got up and closed the windows. This didn't help and finally the Man put her in our closet (aka the fortress of solitude) and closed the door. She happily slept there until 6 am when she had to go out for some business.

Needless to say, it has been a tough week for our LeeLee Bug. I hate to see her so anxious. We are going to try and continue to manage it without drugs, but remain open to the fact she may need them for the summer months.

  3. stella has been very upset this past week with all the fireworks in the evenings, last night was rough on her also because we have such a big show here in town over the river, I am glad they will be calming down, it sounds like you are doing a great job helping her to relax. deb

  5. We gave up and resorted to drugs for Monty, but we find it's hard to get the timing correct, or the dosage, and it always seems to wear off way too early or not last long enough...

We've had a couple of bad days with him. :(

  10. Judd and I just survived the 4th of July. I have say Judd is a bigger baby than I am, he wouldn't even sit outside with us to watch the fireworks. He tried to say he watched from inside the house but I don't believe him.

    Aroo to you,
    Sully

  12. We just wish they would limit it to the city fireworks and ban home fireworks. At least it would lessen the time our pets have to be stressed out. They used to drive Bailey crazy but at 13 1/2 he doesn't hardly notice them anymore. Miss Mabel was wound up though. Sorry the storms stress out Hailey so much - poor sweetheart

  13. Poor Hailey! We're not very fond of loud noises either. Thankfully, our town fireworks display is far enough away that we usually don't hear much of it. Joey used to be scared of thunderstorms. But these days, he's become hard of hearing, so he rarely notices them anymore.

  14. We're happy Lee has a panic room! We don't usually mind thunder or fireworks (though, sometimes we bark at the latter) but Bella is terrified when the wind blows the doors....just that little bit if it isn't latched.

  15. We hear you - we have much the same with Ciara here, but mostly for the fireworks. She seems to be working her way through the thunderstorms, but those fireworks booms drive her nuts. She was on valium this year and it seemed to help some.

  16. Maybe a Thundershirt would help - or something like Rescue Remedy!
It was VERY loud over the whole weekend here, but the fireworks SHOULD be over now. We were fine as long as we were inside, but did our potty trips as fast as we could!

  17. Being the 4th of July, we've had lots of fireworks around here lately. We're not happy about all the noise. We hope it gets quiet around where you live so Hailey can relax.

  19. Poor Hailey. I was going to recommend a thunder shirt, but someone beat me to it :)

  20. It is a terrible time of year for pets. My dogs are not upset by firestorms but Pocket hates thunderstorms. Thankfully we haven't had any for a week

  21. Poor Hailey! Heck, even I don't like harsh thunderstorms, so I certainly can understand when the dogs don't. I also try to handle things without drugs. We've had good luck with Calming Collars, though our storms haven't been really severe yet.
Luckily our 4th holiday wasn't too bad here, and Luke just takes himself to the closet when he needs to.

  22. Awwww Lee... I feel your pain...AND FEAR... I hate Storms TOO... Ernie is too dim witted to be afraid. Just sayin.

  23. Duke and Maggie never minded fireworks & thunderstorms, but Relic barks at the noise. Duke looks at him like he's crazy, but doesn't mind the treats they get for being quiet. Our neighbors are having fireworks at a party next week, I'm going to stay home and have a music & treat party with the boys. :)

  25. I don't care about nothing. But mom blast the TV for Lilly so she doesn't hear the boomers and we were just fine. We're so glad they're over for kids like you that are so scared

  26. Poor Hailey......there's a lot to contend with in summer with fireworks, storms, parties, etc. Sounds like her "fortress" is a good option!!

    Hugs, Sammy

  27. Lilly Ann here at our house had a terrible week last week for the same reasons, and then by a miracle, after all the uproar Sunday night (the fourth)... it calmed down and got quiet. Then this morning, we had a pop-up thunderstorm and she was at the basement door, pawing to get down to where she can't hear anything. Thank heavens for the basement!

  28. Poor Lee Lee. I used to watch my sister Lily go through the same thing. Finally, she went deaf (old age) and she wasn't bothered by loud noises any more.
