Thankful Thursday - Blogger Recognition Award

We are a little late in formally accepting the Blogger Recognition Award that Pets Overload honoured us with recently. We greatly appreciate being thought of for an award!

We are going to follow most of the rules in accepting our award.

We will share how we got started blogging and share 2 pieces of advice to new bloggers.

How this blog came to being:

Rewind almost 7 years ago and you have a crazy Lady trying to navigate her way through a challenging dog (aka Hailey). I wanted a place to show the people who had rescued her that she was ok and to share the journey of having a challenging pup. I created this blog, never thinking more than a handful of people would read it. Now, I am part of an awesome community of bloggers. 

My two pieces of advice:

Be yourself and tell your story. It is easy to be 'fake' and hid behind your computer, but people sense that. 

Have fun! My favourite posts from others are often ones where I can tell how much fun they had in the moment or creating the post.

Thankful Thursday - by Hailey

I, Hailey, graciously accept the following award, presented to me by the gang at Love is being owned by a husky.

I know the award said it was given to Hailey and Zaphod, but we all know this blog wouldn't exist without me, and therefore, the award should be mine. If this was a supporting role award, clearly that would go to Zaphod. He is a great supporting player in my life.

I would like to give a little bit of thanks to the Lady. She does do a little to make this blog possible. She does also do an OK job at taking care of me. Overall, she is pretty well trained.  I will also give a little thanks to the Man. He sometimes helps me feel brave when I am scared.

I also want to thank the other supporting character in my life, Ninny. He is a good cat. I only wish he wasn't so old so I could play rough with him. That would be better.

Finally I would like to thank myself for being so full of life and joy and all the rest. The world would be boring without me. I pass this award on to everyone who makes those around them smile.

We Are Alive

Lady doesn't feel that alive after 22 hours awake and traveling and then we may have only let her sleep 6 hours, she is now back with us.

We will share all our adventures over the next couple of days! Overall, Grammie and the Big Guy said we pups were really good. YAY! Uncle Chris found Nin a bit annoying:)

An Acceptance Speech by Hailey

Hawk was kind enough to share (what I think is a much deserved award, I am truly under appreciated in my life) this fabulous Shine On Award.

I am going to break some of the rules for this award (I don't follow rules well), but am giving a great big thank you to Hawk for thinking of me (I know it was out of kindness that he mentioned Zaphod on his blog).

Here are 7 random things about me:

1) I don't like most fruit and veggies. I try them and will sometimes eat them, but mostly just because I am afraid Phod will take them.

2) My Lady's favourite part of her day, is often in the wee hours of the morning when I decide to honour her with a leg snuggling in her sleep.

3) I am no longer that excited to see deer. While I am alert when they cross our path most morning, I don't try and yank Lady's arm off any more (the same can not be said for small creatures such as ravens, cats, frogs, groundhogs, squirrels).

4) I will only let my Man cut my nails, even though the Lady did all the work to make me not terrified of having them cut.

5) I jump up on people I love when they first enter the house. This is how they know I love them and no matter what Lady does, she can't get me to stop. I will be calm and they will think they are safe, but then when the don't expect it, I will jump.

6) Hero's dog treats are currently my favourite (this is how the Lady is getting me to do rollover).

7) I like routine. I can tell time and am very good at letting my people know when they are not following the correct routine (like stare, scratch at the door to say my dinner is late and sass them).


I am suppose to nominate people for this award, but it is always so hard because everyone deserves it, so I am passing it to everyone!

The New World Order

I really don't know where the time goes, but here we are late Saturday morning just getting around to a post!

I have started experimenting with a new work schedule this week since I am my own boss and can do this. As mentioned earlier, in general I am not a good boss because I never say no and I don't set clear work boundaries. I am hoping by publicly stating my goal it will help. My goal is to work 4 days a week. I am flexible on which day I don't work and understand there may be times that one week I can't make this happen.  Ideally at least 2 weeks of the month one of those days will be from home, meaning I only leave the house 3 days for work. I always have a lot of paperwork to do (I spent 7 hours on it on Thursday and still had more) so I would be very busy on my day at home.

The problem with this schedule is that it has me out of the house 14 hours a couple days a week, which means on work days I have less time for the things I love (like reading all your blogs). This week I was able to visit a lot of blogs on lunch or break times but not comment. So don't be surprised if we are commenting less than we would like.

Don't worry about Lee and Phod on my long days. They always get their long walks. The man works shorter days, so they aren't alone that long. Also, I am making sure to give them extra love and exercise time in the evening. After all, we have 3 acres we hardly use. This week I added strolls through our own bush in the evening. The dogs love this and climbing up and down the hill behind our house adds exercise. Plus I am using this land I am working so hard to pay for!

A Ridiculous Dog Lady Moment

I made the choice to let Hailey off leash last evening in the yard. She had been off leash Tuesday and Wednesday with no problems. While we were out, she got the whiff of groundhog and off she was into the woods, which are on our property.

I called, and called, but she was very busy hunting groundhog and had turned her ears off.

I was not dressed appropriately so I came in and put my boots and snow pants on and went out to fetch her.

The issue with retrieving her was that the snow is still so deep. As I tried to walk toward her I was sinking in the snow above my knees. I realized I was never going to get to her. While she was doing a great job and was still in the yard, I figured eventually she might leave it.  My problem solving brain kicked in and it occurred to me - the dogs don't sink as much, maybe if I crawl I can get her.

So I started crawling across the yard (like the distance of a football field). It worked, I didn't sink, I made better time and realizing how ridiculous this must have looked, I laughed and I laughed.

I reached Hailey, got a hold of her tie out and we crawled back. It wasn't as easy with her. Especially when we went by the spot I think the groundhog is living in.

Where was Phod during all of this? Just pupping around. He was following me and he stayed with us.

I am glad that no one saw me, but at the same time would have loved a picture or video to see how ridiculous I looked!

11 Random Facts about me

1) The tub is my favourite place in the house. 

2) I remember my dreams most nights. They are often very vivid and weird. I know I dream in colour and feel real pain in them. Some dreams stay with me for days and weeks. 

3) I met 7 and remember 6 of my great grandparents.

4) I have a potty mouth. I love to swear.

5) If I didn't have the Man, I would likely become a dog hoarder! 

6) Nothing in the world makes me happier than a list. So doing this type of thing is my favourite thing! 

7) I spend a lot of time in car. I amuse myself listening to CBC radio, autobooks, satellite radio, or working on my french.

9) I inherited an ability to eat from my late Poppa. My Poppa and I had eating contests when I was a kid. After a big roast beef dinner, with seconds and dessert (my Nana could cook) he would challenge me to an eat off. I could eat a big bag of chips and a whole bag of cookies after dinner! [Not healthy I admit, but fun as a kid]

10) I sleep with a sleep mask and a stuffed bear.

Those who love me most use an abbreviation of my name, with either My or Miss in front of it. it has just always been the way it has been for my whole life! Only about 6 people can get away with calling me anything but my name. 

2) If you won the lottery, what's the first thing you'd buy?

Land around me so no one can build.

3) What was the last thing you splurged on?

I am pretty good at not splurging . . . . . It was probably a fancy dinner.

4) Favourite chip flavour? 

It is a tie, salt and vinegar and ketchup

5) What's your favourite movie?

The Muppet Movie - 1979

6) What are the 3 closest objects to you?

A dog toy, Zaphod's dish, the dining room table.

7) Where would you want your next vacation to be?

We are off to the Caymans this winter!

Timothy Findley, The Wars - but the truth is I love all his books except this last one, Spadework (it was the only one with a happy ending, go figure!)

I think autumn is the prettiest

Part of the award is to answer the following questions. We are letting Lady answer them from her perspective for once. So here are the questions she asked us.

1. What is your favorite font?

I use arial at work all the time currently. I don't know if it is my favourite, but it is the one I use.

2. What is the first book you remember reading?  

I hated reading as a kid, so I often remember being made to read. There are lots of children's books I read, but the first real adult novel I read and enjoyed  was Dances with Wolves.

3. What is the first book you fell in love with and never wanted to end?  

The first book I read that made me love reading was Timothy Findley's The Wars. I never wanted it to end because I knew the ending would be tragic. I have read it a lot of times, but always stop before the end. 

4. How much time do you spend on the computer a day for work?  

Depends on the day. About half my job is paperwork and half is not.

5. How much time do you spend on the computer a day for other reasons?  

I am spending about 30-45 minutes on my course. I spend another 1-2 hours on blogging and other fun stuff. I don't really watch TV - this is my entertainment.

6. Do you have an animal companion?  What type of animal and name?

7. What is the motto of your life?

Hmmm, that is hard. I admire all the parents of the kids I work with. Having a disabled child is a hard thing and they all work tirelessly to fight for serves for their kids. Their dedication is inspiring.

I am excited to have a chance to write an acceptance speech.

I would like to begin by thanking Murray from http://murraysmouth.blogspot.ca for being so brilliant and sharing the Versatile Blogger award with me. I accept this award and am not allowing Phod, Nin or Baggy to speak because in case you didn't notice this blog is mine. It is not the Phody Chronicles or the Ninny Chronicles or Life with an old grumpy Baggy cat. It is the Hailey Chronicles. It is my blog that I sometimes share (when Lady makes me).

Clearly I am a very deserving girl for the following seven reasons:

1) I am very smart and have a great memory. I am good with my tricks.
2) I am a very good girl. Any reports of mischief are exaggerations or from the imagination of a certain slightly delusional Lady.
3) I am beautiful and unique looking.
4) I willingly share my blog, toys and attention with the other creatures in my house.
5) I never try to hurt innocent animals (groundhogs and squirrels are evil).
6) I always have my listening ears on. Just because some people can't talk loud enough for others to hear is not my fault.
7) I am very patient with Nin and Baggy and Phody and Emma. And most importantly my people. They need a lot of work, but have come a long way in the 2 years 10 months I have been training them.

Celebrating our Week

To celebrate the end of the long week alone our Lady is presenting us with awards.

How can something so cute and little be so much work!

Dog who was the least amount of work: Hailey (Lady wanted to faint when she realized this). Lee is never the least amount of work, but this week she was a dream dog.

Dog who made interrupted sleep the most: Emma

Dog we felt the sorriest for: Zaphod - it is not his fault that he gets so car sick or got kennel cough

Pet who is causing the most worry: Nin - he has not been eating very much the last few days.

Easiest overall pet: Baggy

Things we learned this week:

• 3 dogs is way too many - 2 is the right amount
• Lady never wants another puppy again (she had said that before but this really reminded her)
• Our vet was right, even with the kennel cough vaccine you can still get it
• Phod has a great memory to remember how much he hates the car
• Sometimes things you think will make your life easier make it harder
• The Lady can walk the 3 of us for about 25 minutes
• A king sized bed is not big enough for one adult and 3 dogs
• Lady gained a better appreciation for the single parent life with real or fur kids

PS. Phod is feeling much better. He isn't coughing and neither of the other 2 seem to have caught it. However, Emma had a touch of an upset stomach . . . always something.

When the Man got home last night, he scared Emma and she peed all over the bed. Lady really loved cleaning up pee when she wanted to be sleeping. Man came back with a cold and is cranky.

Lady does have to admit this was a better week then last time the Man and Uncle Chris went away. That time, Gemi died. No one died, so it is better.
