Getting dinner ready |
Hailey has always acted like she is always starving. We purchased the slow bowl because of it. When she went on her prozac we were warned that it was likely she would develop gluttony, as that was the most common side effect. What happened was she actually slowed down her eating. The first few weeks, she didn't even eat all her food. The vet couldn't believe it.
When we took her off her meds, her gluttony came back and was worse. It was like she needed to make up for all the times she ate slowly. She was eating so fast, even with her slow bowl that she was throwing up.
We have had to instituted the 2 courses at meal time. She gets her softy and half her hard food and then the rest of her hard food. It seems to be working, she hasn't been sick in weeks. I have almost not given them the second half several times.
I accidentally gave her the full amount Saturday night (I put Phod's scoop in her bowl), and I am happy to report she ate it slowly.
Now the next thing we are going to be taking on: Counter Surfing. So far it is Hailey 87 million, Lady 0, but we are working on having her sit on her bed when we are in the kitchen. Will keep you posted if we get a win!
Not impressed to be on her pillow |
WTG Hailey, I just wishes I had longer legs so I could counter surf. Candy dog, the lurcher from next door showed me how to counter surf and she scored some very tasty chicken slices....oh I WANTS longer legs!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteHehehehe, oh Hailey, it is because Lady loves ya that she is being strict - each day that passes you will fill that bit more secure and not needful of gulping and surfing. It may take a while, but you'll get there! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
Winston absolutely inhales his food. So far we haven't had any issues with him upchucking it. The idea of a slow eating bowl is one I may try for him.

ReplyDeleteOh Oz would be jealous of Hailey's counter-surfing. He is too short to get up there! I am glad that she has slowed down her eating. Good luck with your next adventure in pet parenting. LOL
ReplyDeleteGrreat job on your counter surfing, Hailey!! Don't let Lady fool you, it's the BEST!!
ReplyDeleteJessie!
I eat too fast and get a little regurgitation thing going. Mom has tried a lot of the methods to get me to eat slower, but I have mastered them all!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the counter-surfing! I haven't tried that. Yet.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Thatcher
You keep eating slowly little one. Now let me know some counter surfing rules

Hailey has the same disease as our mom! Me and Stanley are free fed, ever since we were babies. We could never do that with mom!
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Cody is our "Gluttony Boy!!" lol DakotasDen
ReplyDeleteWe are pretty lucky to have no gluttons here, but Bilbo does have an eating disorder...he will go 1 or 2 days without eating...and then pig out (although he doesn't eat fast, he will eat slowly over a period of up to 4-5 hours). He's always done this, and after trying prozac(made him hyper/worse) and even steroids (which I hate), we decided to just let him be...
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are having great progress with Hailey! Hope she gives up the counter surfing soon!
Hailey is so funny!
ReplyDeleteShe doesn't look overweight, even if she's stuffing herself.
ReplyDeleteWe are pawsitively GREEN with Jellyness over your Counter Surfing ability... Lee.
ReplyDeleteWe hope you continue to eat in a Slow and Steady manner.
Gosh, Rita is such a slow eater. And so picky. She's so suspicious we might try to slip her something she doesn't like, she has to pick through every bite! Little beast. Sounds like you are making good progress on the gluttony. Fingers crossed on the counter-surfing! (Our last dog, Abby, was SUCH a counter-surfer...but she had cancer, so she got away with murder.) :)

ReplyDeleteWE MIGHT BE 2ND COUSINS ONCE REMOVED. I'VE BEEN CALLED OINKY AND PIGGY AND WELL YOU GET MY MESSAGE. SINCE MOM IS RETIRED SHE FEEDS ME 1/2 MY CANNED AND KIBBLE IN THE AM AND 1/2 IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. I GIVE HER PITIFUL POOR ME EYES IN BETWEEN BUT SHE IS IMMUNE TO THEIR EFFECTS. We are so glad the new feeding is working
hUGS MADI YOUR BFFF
I'm always hungry too. I would eat all the time if I could. But the mom rations my portions...saying I'm gonna get as big as a house if I keep eating too much. ~Wally
ReplyDeleteMy mom puts water in with my raw meat so that I have to slurp it up. Otherwise it would be gone in a glup
ReplyDeleteWe understand your anguish. If only our tummies could hold what we put in our mouth.
ReplyDeleteOne benefit of short dogs is they can't counter surf, haha!
ReplyDeleteCounter surfing is my dream. I am too tiny to reach anything good. I can only hang around underfoot and wait for something to drop on the floor. #floorpies
ReplyDeleteLove and licks,

Ghostwriter is glad we can't reach the counter!
ReplyDeleteWells, I hopes your Moms can gets you to eats slower, you don't wants to throw up all the times...that's no funs. I am sure she can figure out how to out-smart you! hehehehe
ReplyDeleteNows, I wish I could counter surf!!! Oh boys, that is my DREAM!!! I knows, I knows, you say, 'butts Ruby, you are big enough to gets your paws on the counter and grab good stuffs!" yes, this is true, butts Ma keeps everythings pushed to the BACK of the counter, so I can't reach it. I have dreamed of pushin' the dining room chair to the counter and jumpin' up, butts, alas, I don't seem to have mastered that trick...yet ☺
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
I eat very fast - I get half in the morning and half at night. Wish we were tall enough to counter surf!
