It happened like this - without thinking, she opened the garage door, Hailey screamed and Phod ran. Lazarus the groundhog was not only out of his hole, he was way, way, way out of his hole.
The poor little guy ran as fast as he could, with Phod on his heels, Hailey screaming and the Lady yelling at Phod to stop and for the groundhog to run. About 1 foot from the groundhogs hole, Phod picked him up by the back end. Lady yelled to drop it, and Phod put the squirming groundhog down and it dove into the hole.
A careful inspection of Zaphod showed no injuries.
We haven't seen Lazarus since. We don't know how seriously he was injured. Phod did not appear to be rough with the groundhog, he didn't shake him or anything. We will continue to watch for him.
In the meantime, Phod always goes out on leash until Lady has inspected to make sure there is no wildlife around. If there isn't he can be off!
I would never do such a thing, look at how sweet I am! |
PSA: Remember on May 23rd Dory is hosting a blog hop in memory of our dear friend Whitley.

ReplyDeleteCrikey Phod - my heart stopped all the way over here in the Bonny Land... you need to watch that Lady's doesn't fur real!!! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
Glad Phod was OK and listened when you said drop. I bet the groundhog is fine, too, maybe a just bit shaken up.
ReplyDeletePhod you are quicker than Greased Lightning!! I think you deserve a Tbone for responding to drop it!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness all ended well.
Hugs madi our bfff
We completely understand Phod. Mom thinks we have a gopher outback and he is an annoying beast.
ReplyDeleteYou do look VERY innocent Phod...I'm sure it was just a little accident and you didn't mean to hurt the groundhog, how were you to nose he wasn't a fast runner
ReplyDeleteLoves and licky kisses
Princess Leah xxx
That is a great photo of you, Phod! I'm glad everyone's ok.
ReplyDeleteit is tough - Phod was just doing what his instincts told him - to protect his territory - and we hope Mr Groundhog just got a scare more than anything
ReplyDeleteHey Phod!
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm acutally very impressed! BOL. I know the peeps don't understand... mine never understand when I bash a chipmunk... but I think you did great. Glad you weren't hurt and maybe Lazarus will move on to a less guarded territory. BWAR HAR HAR
BTW: My Mom accidentally helped me dead a munk last week and I thought she was gonna cry. *weird*
Grr and Woof,
Sarge, Police Commish
OMD! Poor Lazarus must be scared something awful now! But Phod shouldn't feel so bad...I would've chased that groundhog too, though I believe my years may have slowed me down enough that I would not have actually caught him.
ReplyDeleteoh.... the mama is sad with your lady for the groundhog... we hope that he will be like lazarus of bethany who came back too.... on the other hand, we are glad that Phod is ok ... hugs to my bestest girl Lee and Phod and a big one for the lady...
ReplyDeleteOh no you can't play with that groundhog silly
ReplyDeleteLily & Edward
whew we were worried we are glad all is okay. stella rose
ReplyDeleteHope Lazarus is okay and with that said....OMD Phod, I bet that was a great chase! Sorry your Lady ruined it by making it a catch and release chase. I know you wont do it again; wink, wink.
ReplyDeleteAroo to you,
Sully
BRAVO ZAPHOD.... BRAVO... you CAUGHT Lazarus... it is GOOD that you didn't Deaded him AGAIN beclaws we don't think they can Come Back a SECOND time... an THIS way... you can STILL have another Chance at him... WELL DONE BUDDY... We are VERY MUCH PROUD of this Auspicious Action !!!
ReplyDeleteWow! You caught a big old ground hog? We call them wood chucks. Be careful, Phod, they can be really nasty! We're still searching for the rabbit hole that all those bunnies came from last week!
ReplyDeleteI bet the groundhog is ok...kudos to YOU for being so quick! Not sure if I can do Whitley's thing because Dakota doesn't wear any clothes! BOL!! DakotasDen
ReplyDeleteHey what FUN!
ReplyDeleteAnyone would think Phod was a terrier or something…
Toodle pip!
Bertie.
Oh dear, poor Lazarus. But it's not Phod's fault. He did what he was supposed to!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good dog Phod was to drop Lazarus when you told him to! That's a pretty good prize for a dog and I'm sure a lot of dogs wouldn't have let go of it. We hope Lazarus is OK, it sounds like Phod probably didn't hurt him much if he only had him for a few seconds.
ReplyDeleteWe had a porcupine hanging around in our yard - now that was scary! Luke tried to go after him even when on leash, but he also listened to me when I told him "no". Thank goodness - I might not have been able to hold onto him since he's so strong and it was sudden.
We have been through this with a possum!
ReplyDeleteUhoh.......temptation is impossible to resist but we do hope Lazarus will rise again and wasn't seriously hurt. Phodie was just doing what comes naturally...... :(
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sammy
Years ago, soon after I fenced my backyard, Ceilidh and Tucker scared a rabbit to death (or shook it); there was not a mark on it. I think the normal escape routes were blocked by the fence and they got it cornered. I felt bad for days.
ReplyDeleteI'd luv to get a groundhog. Unfortunately, I'm just stuck hunting lizards dat sneak in da sunroom.
ReplyDeleteOh, super scary!!!!
ReplyDeleteCammie!
These things happen - it's all in the dog's nature to hunt. We both scared Mom to death one day when we both stuck our heads into the ground cover around our big spruce tree and came out with a big old possum in our mouths. Of course, we got the "leave it" command and that possum waddled away:(
ReplyDeleteWoos - Ciara and Lightning
Oh, that would be some excitement! When we meet you at BAR Phod, you will have to give us the impawtent details!
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Well, we do think groundhogs are fair game....BUT SHE doesn't!
ReplyDeleteOh Phod! We know you just couldn't help yourself. We bet Lazarus is okay...those critters are pretty hardy.
ReplyDeleteOh my dog. We had a groundhog in our yard last week. That chunky little groundhog guy can run fast. He escaped under the fence. Phod u must be a really fast runner to catch Lazirus like that.
ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting story! I'm glad it has what seems to be a happy ending. We'll see when L pops out again.
ReplyDeleteLove and licks,
Cupcake
I am sure he is fine. He is just licking his wound. But now that you have made your point no more chasing Lazarus
ReplyDeleteThings like that happen sometimes!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, poor Lazarus! He's probably fine though, Phod probably just gave him a playful scare.
ReplyDeleteHi hi hi! Ojo here! We are sorry we missed so many posts and happenings! Our person had a sore neck and could not sit at the computer to help us with blogs. Also our Walks were very slow and mostly boring. But we are happy to say that she is now better and our Walks are fun again, and we are BACK!
ReplyDeleteHandsome Phod, I will say first that you are indeed very sweet. So am I. BUT I caught a mouse in the field just yesterday! It was awesome! So good luck with your ground hog!!!
