Mischief Monday - Oh Phod

Last Tuesday I worked from home. As it has been bitter cold in the morning, I decided to take the dogs out for a snowshoe over lunch. It started well enough, Phod stayed close, and  came when called. We had just crested the last big hill behind our neighbours' house when suddenly, Phod was gone. When he has taken off on me before, I could always see/hear him. Hailey lost her mind but settled when we   started tracking him through the bush.

We came upon fresh deer beds (that is what I call the indentations the deer make when they sleep in the snow). There were at least 4. If I had to guess, the deer were sleeping and Phod found them and off they all ran.  I started to follow their tracks through the bush with all these great smells and fresh poop for Hailey. I got to a spot where the bush was thick and the deer had run different ways. With Hailey leading, I couldn't figure out which way Phod went.

I decided I would take Lee home and then go out and search for Phod. Lee and I trudged home. (She threw up on the way because of all the deer poop she ate too quickly). I took off my snowshoes, I put her in, and I grab my phone (in case he was found and someone called the number on his tag). I get my snowshoes back on. I open the garage door, and there was my handsome boy.

He knew he was in trouble. He sulked by the front door the rest of the day. He is not going to be able to be off leash when I snowshoe now. I am going to have to learn to snowshoe with them both on leash!

There is an upside to all of this adventuring, I had two very, very tired dogs!

PS On Sunday the 4 of us went snowshoeing, Phod on leash. We let him off in the backyard when we got back and he took off again. He came back and we had the opportunity to do the trail again. While I appreciate the extra exercise, I don't appreciate the stress that goes with it.

  3. I have a fenced-in backyard and deer love to jump the fence and sleep back there. I keep letting my dog out in the morning after looking for deer, but we have a third-car garage they can hide behind. I've seen deer back there after she's gotten out. They always jump the fence, but I worry they'll get scared and kick my dog. I don't know if that's just paranoia?

  6. we have never had a dog we could trust off leash except in our fenced yard. and i see people letting them off leash at our park where it says leash only. i fear for the dogs because one minute they are by the owners side and the next they see something to chase. we have cars to worry about. at least where you are Phod is safe unless he gets lost or runs into a bear... glad he came home all by himself.

  16. Good gosh, that would have put me in a panic. We have lots of deer (and deer beds) around here, and I know my dogs would go chasing after them in a heartbeat if they could. So glad Zaphod came back.

  18. That is TERRIFYING! I'm glad there was a happy ending. No more off leash for that naughty boy! Mom never lets me off my leash. Sometimes, she puts my leash on IN THE HOUSE if I'm being naughty!

  20. Oh Phod! I know those deer are interesting but you've got to stay close, okay?

I'm glad he made it home! The girls did that to us once when we were hiking and it was very scary. Luckily they came back after about 5 minutes but I'm telling you, those were the longest 5 minutes of my life. They did not go off leash again for a good long time after that.

  26. Well Phod, you are quite the opportunist I see. But well done for coming back home in the end.
    Toodle pip!

PS I have never seen snowshoes, but once when I was a puppy Gail tried to take me cross country skiing with her. I was very scared of her suddenly HUGE feet, and the whole episode was not a success and has not been repeated...

  27. Well he knows he shouldn't do what he does but he can't help himself....that snow just makes him crazy (temporarily) and he's wandering off - it's tough not knowing where they are though - very stressful indeed!

  28. Before we got Tuiren I could walk Fenris off leash, after I realized I couldn't keep a close enough eye on him to prevent rabbit/squirrel/deer chases. Before Tuiren when I noticed something had attracted his attention I used a treat to get him to sit and refocus on staying with me. Anyway I wound up getting a thing to go on the leash that connects the two dogs. So I just have one leash to deal with.

  30. We're so glad he got home safely. Our old Charisma dog used to sneak outside and explore the neighborhood. We had to be very careful about opening the door so she wouldn't slip out.

  31. We're just glad Phod found his way back home safely! We temporarily lost our beagle Kobi once. Our neighbor was caring for him, and took him outside on a flexi lead. A bear passed through the yard and Kobi took off after it, pulling the lead right out of the man's hand! We got a call at work, came rushing home and could hear Kobi barking down in the woods below our house. The lead had gotten stuck in some bushes. Wildlife is just too much of a temptation for some dogs I guess!
