Winter Has Not Arrived Yet

Christmas Eve was the warmest on record.  It was 17 C/ 62 F. It was sunny.  It was so warm that on my walk back with the dogs, I took off my sweatshirt and walked home in a t-shirt. On Christmas Eve, I walked 2 km/1.2 miles in a t-shirt! It was wonderful. The wind did pick up in the afternoon. We lost a tree out front (in fact, Uncle Chris had to move it off the road to get here). Many in our area were without power for over 24 hours. Our power flickered but never stayed off.

The local power outages made me think of the first Christmas we were in this house 3 years ago. A storm knocked out hundreds of trees. We were without power for 72 hours. It came back Christmas Eve day.  We lived for those 72 hours without any electricity, heat or water (because we are on a well). Those 72 hours were long and cold and we just sat snuggled on a mattress by the fire under every blanket we owned. When the power came back on the area of house we were living in was 11 C/ 52 F. After a second power outage that summer that lasted 95 hours got a generator, so we would be much more comfortable if we were without power again.
Christmas Eve Day - Zaphod, Hailey and Emma

Christmas day was not as warm, only 8 C/42 F. I didn't need a hat, or boots, or a winter coat, just my fleecy. It was lovely. Normal temperatures for this time of year are -10 C/14 F, so you won't hear me complain!

Near fear, looking at the forecast, Old Man Winter is about to wake up and head our way. We will enjoy these last few days before we are back to reality!

We will tell you more about our Christmas in a day or two. We hope everyone had the Merriest of Christmases!

  2. Hailey and Phod for as long as we have known you we never remember there not being considerable snow on your ground by November. 62 must be amazing in December.
We heard on the news the Cherry Blossoms in Washington, DC were blooming. They always bloom in April. Crazy weather but we are so glad you enjoyed it. You appreciated the warmth a lot more by remembering those cold days w/o power too

  12. We are also having crazy hot weather! It has been in the 80's this week but it's expected to be in the 30's this Thursday. I am expecting some pretty severe storms between now and then!

  14. It is very odd for you up north to be so warm!!! We are having true winter now, and I have to admit that I'm enjoying it. I hope that you enjoy it when it finally arrives!!

I hope that your Christmas was wonderful. Sorry for my absence - we had a houseful of guests, which meant very little computer time!

  15. we had a very warm Christmas in New England too. We hated all the snow last year but now we are missing it. There is nothing we enjoy more than being in a warm bed on a cold day. Wishing you a great New Year

  16. Cute photos. When our power was out for 3 days back in 1996, we got a generator- something about not being able to flush or get water really motivated us.

  18. I swear there's nothing worse than being without power! So glad you have a generator now. The house we hope to buy has one, I'm looking forward to that!
Winter will finally be arriving here too, in the form of several inches of snow...just as we were planning a trip out of town...doesn't that figure?

  19. We had a white Christmas at my house. I could have done without the snow, but Old Man Winter felt we needed it since we've had mild winters the last few years.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

  20. Belated Merry Christmas to you! We had a warm Christmas Eve too and I plan a post on that this week provided we do not loose electricity or internet from the ice! storm we are supposed to get today.
