Project Hailey - Walk, Walk, Walk
Thank you all for your experience/thoughts on the invisible fence. I have decided that I don't think this will be the best solution for Hailey. I think her prey drive is too strong and she will take the pain to get the squirrel. If I was worried about Phod wandering away, this type of thing would likely work for him, but he is a different beast.
People also suggested a fence. This would be too complicated and very expensive because our yard is too big and hilly. We could consider putting a dog run in but it would not be attached to the house. We will keep this in mind. In summer we do give her tie out time while we are out, so she gets a little bit of a wander
Our current solutions, now that the weather is improving, is to give her two walks most days. This week I was able to do this every night because it was March Break, I was home from work by 5:30. Next week, until the summer, I will be back to regular life and I will have to work some evenings, so it may not be possible to get her walk 2 every night. I will do my best. Also, will have to see how my body reacts to all this extra walking! My goal is 4-5 second walks a week.
Hailey is loving these second alone walks. She is a much better walker alone. (In an ideal world I would walk them all separately, but I do not have 1.5 hours in the morning just to walk!) On Thursday, she was so excited that two times she turned to me and did her jump of joy. Last night I could take her for a walk on a different route with the potential of passing lots of dogs (a route I can't handle when I have the two or three of them because I can't keep control if we see other dogs). Being alone is opening her world.
Now I am sure you are all wondering, what about poor Phod. Well, poor Phod can generally be off leash in our yard and all he wants to do is play fetch so he gets lots and lots of running up and down the hill after his frisbee or ball. He is not in need of this walk.
Also, thank you all for your concern about my cut. People were concerned it was infected. The first picture I took was taken immediately after it happened. Was my first thought, I need to do first aid? No! I am a true blogger and my first thought was need a picture of that for the blog. Once I had the picture I cleaned it out very well. It was only painful for about 24 hours and seems to be healing nicely.

Spring - Where Are You?
Today is the first day of spring. It is not here yet. It was -20 C/-4 F yesterday. They are calling for 5 cm / 2inches of snow tomorrow.
Let's hope it comes soon!
These pictures were taken in our yard last evening.
| Front yard - snow is still as high as the deck which is two steps up |
| Side yard - still so deep we don't go over there |
Let's hope it comes soon!
Friendly reminder: Today is the last day to get your pictures in for Boyz or Girlz day. We won't get into time zones, as long as Lady has them tomorrow morning when she goes to work on our posts, she will consider them in on time. Email your ready to post picture to leeandphodATbellDOTnet.

Mischief Monday - Hailey's Bad Week
Hailey didn't have the best week.
Wednesday: We had to adjust the dogs' schedule slightly. They were not alone any longer than usual, just later than usual. Hailey was over the moon when I got home she jumped up and got me good. It was very, very painful and people at work were concerned (it was very red and swollen on Thursday), although it is now healing well. The sharp nail has also been cut.
Saturday: We have been working on allowing Hailey to be off leash in the yard (which is not fenced). Man had let her out in the backyard, with supervision. Hailey decided to take herself for a walk. She did not come when called. She did not wait when told to.
The Man had to go through the bush, in knee deep snow, for about 20 minutes to get her. He actually found her up on the main road, which is very dangerous. Sigh! We are back to square one with the off leash training. She just can't be trusted.
Does anyone have experience with invisible fence? We are thinking about that for the spring. We really want her to have off leash time in a safe way.
Let's see what this week brings!
