Today is Aunty-Yam's Final Fiction Friday and Rosy's Nature Friday. We have a spooktacular tail tale for you today, inspired by events from our real lives!
It was the type of day where the mist swallowed you up and you could disappear.
We had to use our noses and follow the deer had run, as we entered the woods surrounding our house.
It was eerily quiet. The only sound was the crunching of the leaves underfoot.
Suddenly from a distance, we heard a rhythmic tap, tap, tap. As we made our way through the misty woods, it grew louder and louder. TAP, TAP, TAP. TAP, TAP, TAP. It was followed by a maniacal laugh! Our hearts stopped. Then out of the tree, the pileated woodpecker dove over our heads and out of sight, leaving a wake of destruction behind.
Cautiously we pressed on. The smell of autumn decay, a bouquet of aromas for our senses. The quiet continued for some time. The crunching leaves, the occasional flapping of wings the only sounds.
As we rounded the bend toward home, we heard it. The long howl of a distance cousin, likely a coyote. Dogs, we didn't know existed in the neighbourhood barked. The coyote howled again. It sounded closer.
We quickened our pace and soon made it back to our house.
Safe for now . . . . .
