Black and Snuggly Sunday

Thank you all for your kind words yesterday.

The Man was very, very ill on Friday night (it was coming out of both ends) and he woke me up at 5:40 am Saturday morning because when he went to the bathroom to get some medication he fainted. He came to lying on the bathroom floor. Fortunately he was not injured. I am not the kindest most patient nurse at the best of times, but take my sleep away and well . . . . I tried to be as sympathetic as I could. I got him up. I got some food and fluids in him. I put him back to bed.

When I took the dogs for a nice, if not brisk walk, later in the morning, I found myself laughing out loud. None of the things that happened are funny. But the fact they all happened in less than 24 hours is funny - the universe is just ridiculous sometimes. Besides I recently learned that people who can still laugh when faced with adversity are more resilient.

As for my career, it is tough when you are dealing with serious and sometimes dangerous problem behaviours. It is not my favourite part of my job. I am lucky I haven't been seriously injured. In the moment I can stay pretty cool, after I have a brief period of being angry/frustrated/grossed out, but I pretty much move to "how can we change this." The young man in questions, is profoundly disabled. That doesn't make it ok, but it does make it my job. My job is to change behaviour. . That will be my focus and I will keep at it as long as needed. Yes, the successes make all the pain worthwhile and when we are successful at helping this young man, it will be extra wonderful!

And no matter how my day goes, either personally or professionally, I have some great love waiting for me at home.

Here is to a very uneventful week!

  1. Yes.......I know what you mean.....sometimes it's really just about remembering if you get through the bad stuff, there's "better" stuff coming. Attitude is adjustable - the better our slant on things is, the easier it is to cope. I agree with you about coming home to some unconditional love - seeing Sammy's face when I walk in the door erases all the bad stuff.....every single time. We hope The Man is feeling better - that's one horrible bug he's got that's for sure.

    Hugs, Pam (and Sammy)

  2. I missed your post on Friday, but just went back and read it. It does sometimes seem like everything happens at once, doesn't it? And I agree laughter is often the best medicine. Keep laughing and we will keep sending you good wishes that everything calms down soon.

  5. So sorry your Man was ill. Hope he's feeling better now.

Ghostwriter has worked with lots of behavior problems, but they are related to alzheimer's disease. She usually works evening shift and sees "sundowner" behaviors. About 7PM, after supper, the chaos begins and everybody starts acting up!

  6. You do a job that many of us would shrink from and that last thing you need is unpleasantly disturbed nights. Here's hoping your man is on the mend and work is less threatening this week.
Thank heavens we have laughter and dogs.
    All the best,
    Gail.

SHE HAD TERRIBLY TUMMY ACHE NOTHING ELSE BUT SHE DID PASS OUT IN THE FOYER. SHE BASICALLY GOT TO THE LINEN CLOSET DOOR AND FELL BACKWARD. HIT IS SO HARD SHE JAMMED THE DOOR. SHE SAID IT WAS THE WORST SHE EVER FELT. DAD NEVER CAUGHT IT SO THEY ARE CERTAIN IT WAS FOOD POISONING.

  11. I couldn't do the work that you do...it takes a very special person to be strong enough to deal with all of that.
I'm so glad you have that special love at home to help you decompress.
Hoping you get that uneventful week as well...enough is enough! Sometimes all you can do is laugh (just hope it wasn't hysterical laughter....LOL).

  12. yep, just stroking a furry friend for awhile after a tough day, seems to help. SHE still has scars on HER hands from working with a disabled low vision student......he was great at digging his fingernails into hands.

  15. I very much agree that when things are rough there's nothing better than some lovin' from a furry family member - and to be able to laugh. The last few days here haven't been as rough as yours, but they haven't been great, and Rita has been a wonderful comfort. (I'm not a great nurse either. It's such a bummer when the hubs is sick!) Hopefully this week will be better - for both of us!
