I was very excited to be chosen to be one of the sponsors for this event, as it is something that is very important to me.
My face when I hear people don't like black animals |
Black dogs suffer from black dog syndrome. Black animals are less likely to get adopted than lighter ones. No one is sure exactly why. Black dogs can be harder to photograph, there may be beliefs that black dogs aren't as nice (thank you media for this), they may be associated with myths of being bad omens or guards of the underworld, and black is generally associated with evil.
Whatever the reasons, too many black animals don't get to find loving homes. I am very lucky that I have a Lady, who if anything, is biased toward black pets, because she knows about this syndrome. 3/6 animals in her adult life have been black. Lady says when people are selecting a new family member, they should not make a choice based on colour. They should look at the factors of temperament, age, size, exercise requirement, grooming, and possible health needs.
If you are looking for a new dog to love, learn about the available black dogs. The dog may not be the best fit for you at this time, and that is ok, but he/she should be given the same consideration as lighter ones.
Black dogs rule!

You are most special sweet Hailey and Black Dogs Rock fur sure! Thanks for hosting this most important pup day!
ReplyDeleteOh, you are so right! We had the privilege of living with our grand-dog "Dougie Dog", for many years. He is a chocolate lab, but his fur is so very dark ~ most think he is a "black lab"! He is good, gentle, smart and so loving toward all. YES: Black Dogs Rule ... and we have to add,
ReplyDeleteBlack Cats Rule ... and Hailey is one beautiful black dog!
Our black dogs send their greetings and agree that Black Dogs Rule (no blog, so no photos....)! Standard poodle, Rosie, and Cardigan Welsh Corgi, James Bone (who is mostly black, but wears a tuxedo, just like his name sake....)
ReplyDeleteBlack dogs are just as beautiful as every other color. Happy National Black Dog Day, Hailey and Happy October 1st!

Millie is holding her paw up in solidarity with you Hailey! She's happy that our parents didn't care what color she was and could see what a sweet and silly pup she was.
ReplyDeleteHailey! We agree! We think all dogs are special (cats too) and we have a black dog neighbor that all the cats in our "hood" think is terrifc! Reggie never chases or barks at us. We are so happy that you have the purrfect home! Keep being AWESOME! Purrs Marv
