Mischief Monday - Constance 2 - People 0

In our municipality, it is now illegal to put any plant matter or recycling in the garbage. Each home was given a composter. Now we have started composting. In the city, we had a green bin program, where they came and collected the rooting food every 2 weeks. We have never had to upkeep a composter before.

Phod sniffing around the composter.
Day 2, the raccoon we are calling Constance, opened the front door of the composter and dragged everything out. (We know it was a racoon due to the paw prints on the door).

End of week 1, something, we assume Constance (and hope it is), actually lifted the composter up by the back (it is nailed into the ground, but it is rocky so the back is not as secure as we would like) and dragged a lot of the food out the back. The Man actually had brought us all out for an early morning pee when Constance was up to no good. We were not allowed to go and catch her/him.

To try and keep Constance out the people have put dirty on the back. They have put a rock on the top. They have put a layer of dirt inside. They have sprinkled half a bottle of Cayenne pepper inside and around it.
We feel like there may be an ongoing battle between Constance and the people! We are putting our money on Constance.

How long until the bandit strikes again?

  3. It sounds like your composter is quite popular with the wild life. Maybe Constance has some friends that help her.

  4. Yeah. I'll bet that composting program is a real hit with raccoons, possums, bears, etc!

  5. Wow - my sissy has bears that visit her yard. This composter would not be a good thing!

  6. Ghostwriter says when she was a kid, she and her family would go to a cabin in PA every summer. They would sit up late into the night by the campfire and watch for the raccoons who always seemed to manage to get the lid off the trash can. Those guys are pretty crafty!

  7. We are unfamiliar with the habits of raccoons, but we are guessing Constance is a persistent creature!

  8. Constance is consistent. I have heard raccoons are extremely intelligent but I had no idea they were weight lifters too. Good luck.
We are not made to compost we do have a disposal for all table scraps.

  9. I think that's a pretty safe bet. Good luck discouraging the compost burglar.

  10. Good luck with that battle. We hope you are victorious over Constance. And we hope that regulation never comes here.

  14. Raccoons are relentless! They were a big problem in Midway when we started our compost bins! They are clever, persistent and strong. They are creatures of habit, and they can be very stubborn. We found they get habituated to particular locations and come back and back. I finally covered the bins with an old bar-b-que cover and used boards and rocks to hold it down. It took about 6 weeks to discourage her from feeding her kits from our compost. Good luck!

  16. Our city is actually wondering if they will be able to still pick up recycling due to China not buying recycled stuff from the US anymore

  17. Hi hi hi! Ojo here! Compost is yummy! I bet on Constance too. Also, Compost often brings ratties, which are so much fun! You are so lucky to have Compost! (Our people got rid of ours. Sigh. They put it in a green bin and the city takes it. Sigh. I miss our Compost.)
