Helping Him Cope

In the winter, Precious (aka Phod's ball) goes away (it is too easily lost in the snow and some of us have a really hard time coming inside if we can't find it, and that can be dangerous) and is replaced by a chuck disc. We usually go through two discs a season as to show he doesn't love this replacement but it is better then no fetch, Phod chews holes in it.

As we have mentioned, it has been really, really cold here (as it has been in many places). This means our time outside is very short and chuck has been getting only 2 or 3 throws before cold feet bring us in. Phod has seemed a little depressed about not having as much time outside. On New Year's Eve, the Man brought one of his Precious' in. You can't see from the picture but that is the first Precious. We know this as it is the only one he chewed a big hole in.  They played some fetch (more like soccer then high throws) in the house. He was so excited he hardly let it out of his sight for the first night. He didn't know what to do with it when dinner was given. If he could have, he would have eaten with it in his mouth.

We are going to let him keep it for now. It may have to go away when Cousin Emma arrives next week. We hope this helps him with his winter blues.

  1. I totally understand, Phod. My tennis balls are as precious to me as your Precious is to you.

  2. Phod bless your precious little heart. Your devotion and love of Precious is wonderful...I do hope you can keep her with you a bit longer. Does Emma hide her from you or do you JUST not like to have anyone mess with her.

  3. We have the winter blues here too. It's been so cold we are only allowed out to do our "business" and then it's right back inside. The weather peeps tell us it might get into the 20's (degrees F) tomorrow so we are hoping for some outside play time too.

  6. He looks so sweet cuddled with his Precious! 5:30 a.m. and it's still quite dark--we can see that the days are definitely shortening--even if it is 27°C at the moment.

  8. We think maybe some one on one Precious time in a separate room (when Emma gets there) might be in order!

  10. That was so nice of the Man to do that for Phod. We are all missing our walks with Mom, but she says it is too cold and sometimes too icy for her to take a chance on falling. We hope to get at least one or two warmer days next week.

  12. I hope that having Precious with you helps, Phod. The winter blues can be tough to endure. But who can be blue with Precious next to him?

  13. Pocket has only ball she will play with. She has puts holes in balls before. When that happpens we line up the balls and let her choose one and that becomes her new ball. If she lost her ball she would lose her mind

  16. This weather has been MEAN for all of us! Bringing in one of Phod's favorite things in the world - a Precious - was a brilliant idea....maybe it will keep him happy until the THAW (whenever that happens!). Teddy is upset because when he DOES go outside with me on his harness he can't stand to stay out. He looks at me like "turn on the heat Mom" but within a few minutes gives up and wants back inside. We're ALL tired of this cold!

  17. Sorry to hear that you are fed up with the cold weather Phod. We don't like it either but we don't mind snoozing away in the warm on cold days either BOL Hope the thaw comes soon and you can play outside again with Precious. Nose licks and love from Moth xx

  18. Those well loved toys always make a fur-mom smile at the sheer devotion by our pups to a particular toy. Stay warm and cozy and enjoy the indoor tosses down the hallways. 😊

  19. Cinnie is just like that! She has a Hol-ee Roller ball (I order them from Amazon.ca) for inside the house and disks and frisbees for all the snow!
I hope you guys get a break in the weather!

  20. We understand this...our beagle Cricket is the same way about her balls. We can't usually play inside though because she forgets she's inside and stops and pees on the floor! Yup, the obsession knows no limits. LOL
