Mischief Monday - Other People's Dogs

This is a story where Lee and Phod have no part in the mischief!

On Saturday, the Man and I took the 2 for a walk. We were coming down the road when a beautiful chocolate lab named Bear came out of the field. Bear's owner was calling him, but he still came over. The Man had Hailey and I had Phod.  He kept Hailey back while I let Phod sniff Bear. It went ok, but then Phod did a little snap to tell Bear he was boss. I was able to then continue on with Phod (I regained some confidence being able to control him during this), while Hailey had her sniff.

hackles up
On Sunday, I was up well before the Man, but late enough to know we may see other dogs, so I did separate walks. [It is not like the Man can keep sleeping when we leave. The pup who is left behind carries on the whole time]. Hailey and I went up the hill where other dogs live. As we passed a house, a dog came out. The dog's people were outside but didn't notice or care. My poor LeeLee was terrified at first as this very gentle and calm dog sniffed her and the followed us. Hailey clearly wanted to go home so we turned around and that pup followed us the almost 1 km back (.6 mile). As the walk continued, Lee was on alert but did relax some. I then had to delay Phod's walk until this dog left our property. He was not happy.

I was thrilled with how well my pups did during both these situations. It gave me some of my confidence back and we will continue the separate walks when these sorts of things are likely to happen.

  1. That's great that both of your dogs did so well. Too bad the other people were irresponsible letting their dog wander.

We live in a subdivision and there are several families who let their dogs run around without a leash. It really freaks Ruby out and sometimes she snaps a bit if they bother her too much. To make things worse, although our street is quiet, we are right off a major busy road. I don't know what these people are thinking.

  3. Well done Lee!!!! to have a lot of followers is only good at facebook, that's a challenge when a dog walks with you... I always worry something will happen to this "stalker" and I mostly bring this dogs home ... and no, I never got a thank you by now...

Do you know, though, whilst dogs wandering off property is a nuisance, I think the more doggy-social chances they get, the more Hailey and Phod will adapt to the idea that it's okay to keep on walking without struggle. Keeping them separate for this does seem a practical idea. Well done all!!! YAM xx

  6. meeting strange dogs can be tough - I wonder if your dogs are more protective because you live in a more isolated area - their territory is much larger than the average dogs who only see their small yards belonging to them

  7. It stinks when people can't (or won't) control their own dogs. Glad to hear all went well despite the other dogs tagging along.

  11. I give you all an A+!! I think it's funny that the one left behind in the house complains about not being able to go therefore there is no rest.

    Aroo to you,

  12. Aarrgh! This is the second post in a row that featured lax dog owners with off-leash dogs not getting the training or supervision they need and deserve. What is wrong with people????

  13. We are glad you managed to get through those walks, but we really don't like it when other owners are so stupid as to not have their dogs on leash or at least to come get them when it is obvious they are annoying.

Mom had to take Ciara to the vet today and Dad said Lightning carried on something terrible while they were gone:)

  14. YAY!!

So happy both of these encounters went well, yet I still don't understand why people don't keep a hold of (either by voice or leash) of their dogs...

  15. Good job but I would've yelled at them. I hate offleash dogs, they cause us soo many problems!

  16. Gosh! Your dogs were so wonderful (even if Hailey was a little scared).

  17. Great job, Hailey and Phod! After reading about all of these off leash dogs, I'd say it's definitely not your dogs that are the problem, and I'm glad this helped your confidence.

  19. Well done for everyone! Practice can only improve things. Maybe Hailey would have more confidence if she was walking with her fella Easy. Maybe he can stop over to take walks with her?

  20. We are glad you're getting more confident! We have a lot of issues with off-lead dogs here. Fortunately, we do really pretty darn well around them, according to Mom.

  22. Glad that it was a gentle boy that you encountered so that Lee didn't have a negative experience. So far so good!

  23. Good dogs! I can't stand when people don't control their off leash dogs. It scares me, especially given how small Nola and Pike are.

  24. It really bugs me when people don't watch their off-leash dogs. We've had several really scary encounters with off-leash dogs (which is against the law here) and their people either don't care or haven't mastered the "come" command with their dogs. We end up having to pick Daisy up to keep her out of harm's way because all the dogs were much bigger than she is and we don't know them, so we don't know how they'll react. One even assumed a threatening posture with my daughter, which was really scary. I'm glad this went so well for you!

  25. I hate it when people just let their dogs wander with no supervision. It can be so hard for someone walking a sensitive dog (like Hailey or my Shyla). I hope that your neighbors get it together!

  26. Oh man, this has happened to me before, and it just drives me NUTS!!! Ruby is 'okay' if she sees the other dog coming, and if the dog is calm, she is calm. But, if the dog runs up on her, or she doesn't see it coming, or startles her, all bets are off! I think you guys did amazing!
That deserves a margarita! I'll have Ruby drive up with the truck! ☺
    Kisses,
    Judi and Ruby ♥

  27. I am glad they are getting more used to other dogs. I limit my dog walkers to our block and one over where we know all the dogs and how Abby will react to them. She has one cat she sort of freaks out over. It doesn't get close it just hisses at her, then ignores her.

I will be very happy when our yard is fenced, so she can get some playtime and exercise without waking her 3 or 4 times a day.
