We were cat "owners" for 20 years and 11 days. In that time I clearly developed some strong habits/routines about the cats. In the past few weeks I have found myself almost writing cat litter on the grocery list when I noticed it was on sale at the grocery store (it was a really good sale). Over the weekend, when as I was walking to the laundry room with a huge load of laundry I thought to myself "I must remember to scoop the litter while I am down here." I had to laugh out loud both times because I neither need to buy litter nor scope it.
I miss my cats and I miss having cats. I do occasionally get the urge to bring a new one home, but I know it is not the time. We want to travel more (and that is hard enough with the pups). The idea of a kitten is not appealing and the stress over trying to introduce a new cat to Hailey and Zaphod is intense. So for the time being, we will be cat free and maybe, just maybe, I will get over my litter obsession.

seems you miss a part of your life without the purring zen-masters ... maybe it works as planned, I agree it's not easy to bring a new kitty in a two-doggie home :o)
ReplyDeleteMommy hasn't had goldfish as pets in a decade or so. And feeding fish was part of the daily routine -- she says to herself every once in a while nowadays (especially if she is tired) -- it's time to feed the fish -- but then she catches herself and remembers she doesn't have fish anymore. So, we can totally see why you have the urge to buy kitty litter or scoop the poop -- its a ritual, and sometimes its hard to furget. What's that saying... old habits die hard or something like that.

ReplyDeleteDo you nose Mum's dog obsession was what lead her to Blogsville.....when she was between dogs she was surfing the internet looking fur dogs and found all my wonderful furfriends bogs.....she says its what kept her sane until .....I arrived!!!!!

ReplyDelete..do you know, even after several years without the J's I still find myself thinking that when food is on special I ought to buy it - particularly Whiskas and suchlike!!! Jade's chewies were always worth stocking up when on sale... hey ho... it is so very true that at least you can be a bit more flexible in travel with the dogs only. Bless... YAM xx
It is so hard to break a routine that is so ingrained. Of course, I am not sure how healthy a Litter Obsession is to have...but I am sure you will get through it just fine. Hailey and Phod will see to that!

((Hugs)) we are sure if you buy cat litter you can find a kitten or older cat to use it. Maybe even one that is used to doggies.
ReplyDeleteOh, that must be so tough! Old habits really do die hard, but mostly to be without cats after having them for so long can't be easy. I've had them most of my life since I was a teenager. Our Samantha is 13 and we've decided when she's gone we won't be getting any more cats either, not for a while anyway. The dogs demand so much attention I just feel like Sam doesn't get enough, and there are other reasons too. But I wonder what it will be like to not have any cats after so long. Sam could and hopefully will live a lot more years but she does have some health issues, so we just don't know for sure how long she'll be with us.
ReplyDeleteOld habits! I sometimes find myself wandering around the rodent isle at the pet store thinking I need stuff.. We haven't had any rodents in almost 6 years!
ReplyDeleteYes, those things come so automatically! And if you get another cat, even a year from now, you will probably accidentally call it/them buy the other cats' names!

It's hard to break those habits that are so long ingrained. We bet that you will eventually find the right kitty at the right time.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel. I was adding it up and it was 12 years before Ralphie came into my life. Losing my kitty before him was a huge loss the time wasn't right until I met him.

ReplyDeleteIt is so hard to change our habits when we lose a pet. When we lost our beagle I remember getting up to go to bed and feeling lost, because I didn't have to let her out for the night.
