This post is completely my fault. Last Tuesday I took the dogs out. My arm was feeling a bit better that day. I had Hailey on the tie out so that I could play fetch with Phod with my right hand. Lee was doing a great job at staying in the yard. Then she started to eat poop, so without thinking I picked up the tie out with my sore left arm. I couldn't hold it, so I let go. When I let go, Lee realized I couldn't hold her so she decided to run away.

From Sunday - still lists of snow |
Now if she had run down the road, it wouldn't have been good, but I might have been able to do something about it. Instead she ran down the hill in our backyard. I wasn't dressed to go get her, so I brought Phod in, put on my snow pants and boots and attempted to go the hill to find her. The problem was the snow was so deep I sunk to my waist. I got stuck in a hole. I had to use both my arms to pull myself out. I lost my boot in the hole. I tried to crawl or go on my bum, but I realized I couldn't do it. In my attempts to get down and then back up the hill, I hurt my arm some more (I think I added a sprain of the wrist to my bad bruise).
I came in the house, regrouped for a minute, got my phone, got Phod and went back out to find her. My hope being Phod would track her.
We get into the driveway and Lee started barking. While she had taken off down the hill to the right, she ended up on the front yard of the neighbours to the left. I was able to get to her because our neighbours snowmobile had left awesome tracks I could walk on. Hailey was caught on a huge hunk of snow. I got her and we went home.
Hailey only goes on leash when I take her out. I just can't trust her. I have to accept that maybe she can't be a free dog. This is hard, but maybe it is the way it needs to be to keep everyone safe.
That is not a fun situation to be in...a fenced yard maybe?
ReplyDeleteOh dear and we send healing vibes. We hope your am is better today. Naughty Lee. Maybe you are right it is better not to let her off leash. Have a marvellous Monday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Sorry she ran away, but good thing you got her back.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Mom would have been screaming HBO words

OMG I am so terribly sorry but am glad that she is home, thank God. I am so sorry you hurt yourself again. I am with Lily & Edward, I would have been "screaming HBO words" too
ReplyDeleteOf all the dogs we've had (we are on #6 & 7 with Millie & Walter) there is only one that I would have ever trusted off leash. I'm so thankful to have a 1 acre fenced in back yard so the pups can enjoy the freedom but not be temped to chase the wildlife that surrounds us.

Whew that was a mess, glad you got outta the snow hole. Well that leash thingy, well some of us puppers just never get the free range part and coming back!

I'm so glad you got her back , I felt with you while reading. I agree with you, it's better to use the leash when you walk with her, better safe than sorry. I hope your arm is a little better today and I wish you a fast recovery. It's horrible to walk a dog (or dogs) with a wounded arm, I know....
ReplyDeleteGlad everyone is back safe - hope you're not too badly injured after it all! Did you manage to rescue your boot?
ReplyDeleteYikes what a worrying time.. Hailey yous a naughty girl for your Mommy. We hope your arm is OK xxooxxx

Your snow looks like sugar crystals! Dogs around here are never allowed off leash beyond the house unless you are at a dog park. Our yards are super tiny and all fenced in, so I'm free to roam in the back. It has to be hard to not have a fenced in yard with a pup that likes to roam!
