An Accident and Help Requested

Stupid Lady Injured When Not Attending to Her Dog

On Easter Sunday, after a yummy dinner, the Lady, the Man, Uncle Chris and the pups were outside. Emma and Phod were off leash and Hailey was on leash. The Lady was not paying attention to Hailey who was sniffing around the well. The Lady was talking to the Man about the statue of David (the people have booked a very exciting trip for the end of the year). What the Lady missed happening while she was babbling was Hailey deciding she want to play with Emma. Hailey jumped forward jerking the Lady with such force, Lady heard the snap in her neck, the world became blurry, and Lady had to let go of Hailey. Uncle Chris ran and got Hailey. The Man ran to the Lady.

The Man lead the Lady into the house and Googled "treatment for whiplash". He pumped the Lady full of drugs and put heat on it. The Lady had a terrible night's sleep Sunday night because she couldn't sleep on her side and every time she rolled over the pain was terrible. Monday was not much better and the Lady was a complete witch may have been grumpy and spent the day in bed resting her neck.

Every day since then, it has gotten better and her movement has improved. The Lady is glad, but she wonders if her dogs really are going to be the death of her (April has not been her month, her arm, then she was a little sick, then her neck).

All Lady's whining is boring me

Help Wanted

A friend is looking at getting puppy from a breeder. She is very concerned about accidentally getting a puppy mill dog. She wants to know what she should be looking for/asking to make sure she doesn't support a puppy mill. Any advice would be helpful.

  1. Ouch..that sounds very painful. You do need to get it checked out...you might have a stress fracture. As for a puppy....do see the breeder. Gut instinct is the best measure....if you are happy with where they come from then they will be happy. If the breeder doesn't want you to come to their home....forget about them and look for someone else

  2. That injury sounds very painful. Grumpiness is to be expected! For your friend: I agree with the Cowspotdogs - the only way to know for sure is visit the breeder on site.

  4. We are so sorry to hear about your neck!! Sometimes we are hard on our parents. As far as the puppy I would visit the breeder and ask to see the parents. She will know immediately if it is a puppy mill by the smell and what she see's. She can also tell if it has been socialized by how it acts around her. If she refuses the visit and to see the parents then it probably is a mill. Mom said also everyone of us had a distinct smell when she got us. the stinky mill just gets in our pores and it is hard to get off of us.

  5. Oh no, not another accident for your Lady. We are so sorry to hear that she has whiplash, that is very painful!! Give her lot's of anti-inflammatory medicine or muscle relaxers if you have them. It will take a while for Lady to start feeling better.

We're happy to hear that your friend wants a dog (and not from a back-yard breeder.) There are websites to help you find a GOOD breeder. And we agree.... If they don't want you in their home ~ furget about it!

    Hugs,

  6. That sounds very painful. We hope your lady gets better soon. We gave you an award today but didn't realize you already got this one. We should have checked your blog first but I guess it shows how much you are loved.

  7. good heavens - we hope you are feeling better soon.

as for puppies - shelters are a good place to start. Petfinder allows you to search by breed, age and location. if she insists on a breeder, a visit is a must - if they won't let her see where the dogs are kept and housed and see both mom and dad, then MOVE ON. please though encourage her to adopt from a shelter....

  8. OH NO.... Not the dreaded Whipper Snapper Neck thingy... We are so sorry that the Lady had this happen to her... We hope that it gets TOTALLY better Speedy Quick.

When I was looking fur "ERNIE" I searched Dachshund Puppies in Ohio Pencil Vane E Ah Kentucky and West Virginia... THEN I started looking at those that were available... And Sent EMAILS to the ones I was interested in... I asked questions like... how many puppies do you have right now... and what OTHER breeds do you have? How SOON will you have another litter of Dachshunds being born? The ones that said things like... we have 5 dachshunds Now and are expecting another litter in a week... I REJECTED... I also rejected the ones that said they had OTHER breeds available... THOSE are SURE SIGNS of Puppy Mill BREEDING...
Ernie came from a FAMILY who said that it would be at LEAST a year and a half before they would even consider breeding his mommy... IF THEN... She had had One other Litter before Ernie's.
They ONLY had Dachshunds... Ernie's MOM and One other OLDER Girrrrl.
THOSE were SUPER SIGNS that this was NOT a Puppy Mill Breeder... This family was wanting another dachshund... for themselves and they were keeping one of Ernie's Sisters. ALSO... they gave (without me asking) the name of their VET and included his email addy so we could contact HIM about the puppies. A BIG GREEN FLAG there... They wanted to let us know that the mom was taken care of... and so were the Babies... ALSO.... they wanted to MEET US and SEE ME (Frankie Furter). They even Looked at MY BLOG... and emailed that they had read Many Posts... even saying thingys about some of the thingys I had posted about. BIG BIG GREEN FLAG fur THAT ALSO... Making sure that Ernie was going to a nice home!!!
I say.... check them out.... and ask QUESTIONS... and be Cautious of any... evasive or tricky answers.
PeeS... the day we went to get Ernie... they had a Bag of Royal Cannin Dachshund Dry Kibble for Us... since that is what they feed their dog. They wanted us to have that so we could SLOWLY switch him over to Blue Buffalo puppy... ANOTHER Good GREEN FLAG...

  10. hoping you heal soon!!! I think everyone above gave you good advice, I would say trust your instincts, look for red flags in behavior from the pups, look for dirty conditions, and many other things that the others have mentioned

PeeEss...Looks like you have gotten bunches of great advice about breeders, the only other suggestion I would make would be to ask to meet the pups parents and see lineage papers.

  12. Oh no, the lady has really been having a rough time of it lately, and I think she deserves to whine and be grumpy. Hope she is all better soon, and things calm down. I am often saying that my animals are going to kill me one day, but I've been lucky to not have any serious injuries.
I agree with what others said....the breeder should allow one to visit. When we got our beagle and our goldens we visited the breeders a few times before the puppies were old enough to take home.

  13. Poor Lady....at least April is nearly over. You pups need to be more careful. You don't get as many walks when Lady's not well! Just remember.

Frankie and Ernie had some good ideas about puppies. You also have to watch out for people who just have the backyard puppies. They often just breed two dogs and don't worry about heritage. It is important if the breeders are concerned as to the home the pup will join.

  16. Ouch on that neck! Maybe you need to treat it for inflammation? Heat would make that worse. IDK about the puppy mill thing. Can she go to where it was born?

  17. Sorry about the whip lash, thats gotta hurt. Don't know about your puppy breeders but down here they better have state papers. Bites came from a breeder, they saw her papers, and his Mom and Dads AKC papers and all his shots records required. You know puppy mill dogs will not have any papers and lucky if they get any shots. Also really check out the location and how it is kept, a real breeder keeps stuff nice, good kennels, plenty of water and food available at all times, millers just don't give a flip! Oh and check out the appearance and health of the parents!

  20. Poor lady I hope she is feeling better soon. I would advise your friend to make sure she meets the mum and don't go to a random location to collect the puppy. If in any doubt walk away (which I appreciate is easier said then done) check out http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/getting-a-dog-or-puppy/finding-the-right-breeder/ I know it's UK based but some of the points might help. Do you have something similar in the US?

O and we want to see puppy pics!!

  23. We hope you are feeling better!

We suspect that my sister's dog, Charlie, is from a puppy mill. When she got him, his "health guarantee" was on printed paper and the breed part was a fill in the blank, as if they have a lot of other breeds to write contracts for.

Ask to see the parents, what the pups are fed, and if you can see where they were raised (barn vs. living room). If the parents aren't on site, I'd be a bit concerned.
