Wordy Wednesday . . . . Catch Up after the Storm

Last Friday we had 2 huge storms. One happened around 4 am. There was so much lightening it was like a strobe light. Hailey hid in the closet, and Zaphod and Emma were a little nervous and wanted snuggles.  Friday morning we woke up to the first tree down, across the road. After a delayed start, I did get to my last day of work before holidays.
Our lost tree - blocking the road out

The afternoon another huge storm ripped through. We weren't home, but it must have been bad. We lost at least 6 more trees. The power lines were taken out. It took about 95 hours for us to get our power back.

We camped in the house for the 95 or so hours. We got lake water to flush the toilet. Our diet was not great, but we ate. We caught up on sleep (as we went to sleep as soon as it got dark). We learned a lot about generators and are waiting for an electrician to get back to us as we want one installed sooner rather then later. We were lucky that it was cooler (in fact, I needed to wear my flannel pjs one night), so we didn't get too hot.
One of our trees ripped up by the roots

Besides having to empty the fridge and freezer, and not getting the yard work we had planned done (this is why we were both on holidays), our dogs developed a few new issues. Hailey is now scared of wind. It was mildly windy one day and she freaked out. Last night it was fairly windy around 3 and she was up pacing. At one point she wanted love, which is really unusual, but no amount of love could help relax her. Finally the Man put her back in the closet. Also, Zaphod is now a little nervous during a storm. He is not as bad as Lee, but he wants to be snuggled with you. I don't think Emma notices anything different.

It is going to take us a few days to catch up and clean up. We have piles of trees to cut up and move. We have lots of cleaning to do inside the house. We have to refill the fridge and freezer. But we survived it, no one was hurt  and have a greater appreciation for running water. Also,  luckily I have 2 1/2 more weeks of vacation!

Some of the trees our neigbour took off the road that await us to cut up.

PS: Today Phod goes for his annual check up. 3 posts to 1000 stay tuned!

  1. That is a long time to go without power, but as you say, you gain a new appreciation for things you normally don't think about. Super sorry for Lee too. At least the closet is a comfort.

  10. That sounds very bad storm. No power for 95 hours must have been really hard. Glad it's over and everyone is safe!

  11. Oh no! That sounds as if it was dreadful! I don't blame poor Hailey for being afraid. Hopefully in time that will subside?
The main thing is that you are all SAFE!

  12. It's bad enough to not have power, but you also didn't have water? I assume that means you have to pump well water. Glad you are back in the swing of things now.

  14. Lee and Phod have their POWERS BACK!! THAT is super news.
We are so very much sorry that the horrid wind and storm did so much damage and made you AFRAID. We would be afraid too if we had had to endure this HORROR.
Our generator is on WHEELS... butt we had our house specially wired so that we can run its powers right into our house. We just WHEEL the generator outside and start it up... then PLUG it in and it spits out POWERS.
Hope all the damage is Easy to clean up and repair... and MOSTLY we are THANKFUL that no buddy was hurt.

  16. Wow you all certainly had quite a time during your power outage - and that's a LONG time to be without. We do learn to appreciate power though when we have none that's for sure. Just glad you're all OK....sorry the digs didn't like the storms but that's kind of par for the course with animals (and people too for that matter!!!)......Sam hides or gets in a small space to feel safe. Just happy all is getting better - takes time to "recover" !!

    Hugs, Sammy and his Mom

  19. What a terrible, TERRIBLE storm!

You're bein' so smart about havin' a proper electrician install the generator. Lots of peeps have them here but peeps who tried to install them themselves ended up with even bigger problems. I would never let my peeps install one themselves. Of course... my peep #1 IS a technologically impaired duffer. Perhaps others could do a better job of it. Don't know.

  22. OMC! We are verreh glad to hear you got your power back! What a skeery long time! Poor sweet woofies--they has been traumatized by the storm! It is good they have Mom & Dad to soothe and love on them, even if *somebody* did end up in the closet!

  23. Wow guys, I'm so glad you're all safe, even though the dogs are shaken!

It's easy to take power and water for granted until it's not there, I hope the cleanup goes well.....

    Take care
