The Craziest Walk Last Week

On Tuesday, around 6 am, Lee, Phod and I headed out for our weekday morning stroll. We have two routes we can take, one being what we call 'favourite road.' It happened to be favourite road day.

We turn a corner on favourite road (about 1 km from our house), and I see to the right, across the field, a house on fire.

For some perspective. We live in cottage country. On this particular walk which is probably about 1.5 km one way, we pass 1 house on our road, 2 houses on the main road and about  a dozen on favourite road.  I rarely carry my phone with me when I walk.

Lee, did not seem to notice anything was amiss. Phod on the other hand was highly alert. It was clear the fire had just started. We were likely a good football field from the nearest house and 2 football fields from the fire. So there I was without a phone (not that I actually know the name of favourite road, it is a long French one I have never learned), picking up the pace because I am thinking I may have to get much closer to the fire than I would like (when I was 3 I saw a furniture factory burn and probably had PTSD after that and still have a very healthy respect for fire), with the 2 dogs to start banging on doors.

Fortunately, as I got closer, I could hear people out yelling, so I knew people knew. Shortly after I could hear the firetrucks coming up the road around the lake.

The dogs and I continued our walk away from the fire. Lee was a bit upset we didn't get to go up past the house because that is the routine and not doing so means we don't get to smell the best mailbox ever and our walk is shorter. Phod needed a lot of encouragement to keep going forward. Both reacted calmly when we had to stop to let the firetrucks race by.

When we got home the Man and Emma were sitting outside. The Man had heard the sirens and looked out and could see the fire across the field from our house. He yelled at me for not having my phone with me.

It took me another 3 days to remember it and I got these pictures of the house.  I never heard any news stories about it, so I believe everyone was safe.  The lighting is poor in these pictures as it was just my phone, it was very foggy that morning and I only really had one hand (as I had 2 dogs in the other).

  3. That is very scary but thank goodness no-one was hurt.
Here is Scotland we are in mourning because on of our most notable buildings, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 'Glasgow School of Art' suffered a most horrendous fire at the weekend, the second time it's been hit in four years. This time, it looks unlikely that the building can survive.
    Stay safe!

  9. Fire is so scary and so sad. I think the doggies were very brave. Ditto mama! Now Mom wants to yell at you for not taking the phone! ALWAYS take the phone. Not just for picture-taking purposes, but in case something unexpected happens and you need to make an emergency call to help someone. (Mom is never more than 2 feet away from her phone. You don't need to be like her. She is a mental case!)

  10. It is just horrible how fast and furious a fire can be - so destructive. Thankfully no one was hurt. Now Mom says take your phone with you all the time. She does and even got a fancy pouch to clip on her waist when she doesn't have any pockets. You just never know when you will need it.

  13. Hope the owners had insurance!

Our Mama rarely has a phone on her . . . but especially when she is out with the pups. That way, no one can track her down ;p

  14. Pawsitively frightening.
We lost our home, business, everything we owned & a felinesibling to a fire that started in our neighbor's garage back in 2016.
We are still rebuilding (new location) our lives.
I went from weening off one of my anti seizure meds to having a GM seizure every 11 days until just recently; I went 95 days!

Pawsitive energy & strength to the victims.

  16. That sure was a crazy walk. I'm so glad that others had already called in the fire. That cottage looks really bad after the fire. I feel badly for the owners...

  17. Oh noes! I am glads everyone is okays, butts sorry abouts their poor house. I hopes they can rebuild and start again. Paws crossed for them! I am glads your Moms remembered her phone, butts tell her not to feel bad, cause Ma just started carrying her phone a few months ago, along with pepper spray (for the odd weirdo, or dangerous dog).

  20. What an adventuresome walk! I'm glad no-one got hurt. We had a fire down the street last week. Delilah and I walked down, and thankfully, the woman got out safely. Very, very scary. One of my best friends died in a house fire, so I myself have a healthy respect (as well as a little PTSD, like you) myself.
