Trouble Tuesday - Wind

Friday night a serious windstorm rolled through Ontario and Quebec. During the storm, my Hailey Bug, who as you know is terrified of storms, did ok (we had restarted her prozac last week). She was visibly nervous, but sat on the couch with us until the power went out around 10. It was hardly raining, but the wind was crazy. I was sure Emma was going to turn into a kite at the end of the leash! Phod was also nervous as the power kept flickering and he is scared when it goes out. Emma did not appear to notice, other than the fact she didn't like the weather outside.

Terrified girl

Everyone slept through the night, which is great as Emma has been getting up a lot. In the morning the power was still out. Hundreds of thousands lost it. The year we moved into our house we lived 72 hours in the winter and 95 hours in the summer without power. As we are on a well, this meant no water. After that, we got a generator and generator panel installed. Our generator is not powerful enough to run the whole house, but we have water, the fridge and freezer, lights in the bathroom and lots of power downstairs (meaning we can have internet and satellite and heat). We can't use the oven, and there is no heat in the bedroom, but we know we could live very comfortably. Saturday was only the second time since we got the generator we had to use it. It doesn't come on automatically, we have to drag it out and plug it in. The dogs weren't happy with the sound it makes (it sounds like a lawn tractor) but were happy to have their water bowl filled. The power was out for about 22 hours.

We are grateful no damage was done to our place. Aunty K lost her fence. Others had serious damage. At least 3 people were killed.  Hopefully, it is a long while before we have to use the generator again!

  1. We have that very same issue when the power goes out - You're smart to put that generator in! It's something we've been considering, especially when the power goes out, and we need to stop thinking about it, and just do it! But I'm glad you got through the storm unharmed, and it is good news that Hailey, Phod and Emma got through it too!!

  3. So glad to hear you are all right. We've had some strange windstorms this year. Dog Dad can sleep through anything but we get nervous and then we keep Mom up.

  4. You are smart to have the generator. We've not lost power ever in Chicago, but worse case the basement which is partially finished and has a half bath, stays comfortable temperature wise, throughout the year. Still, it might not hurt to get one.

  6. We have a generator too. We never had to use it for many years. But when we finally did, we sure appreciated it!

  10. Yikes! Sorry for all the damage and loss. I'm no big fan of wind either but have never had that kind of power outage outside of a blizzard. Hope there are few of those storms for you guys this summer.

  12. Wow... that was quite a wind storm. We, like you, are on a well, and we lose power a lot. I hoard gallon jugs of water, just in case the power goes out. We need a generator!!!!! That sounds perfect.

  13. That sounds like it may have the same storm that whipped through here last week. Glad you are all OK and the power outage was not too bad.

  14. We had a bad wind storm here about a week ago. We didn't lose power fortunately, but many others in the area did.

  17. Glad you are OK. We have a generator too, mostly for camping but would help if we have a long power outage. Luckily it has been several years since we have had a long one

  19. Gosh sounds like a big storm alright - that's a long time for power to be out - thankfully your generator keeps you going until power's back. We don't have a problem with power outages - when we do get one it's usually less than an hour and cause by someone hitting a power pole! We have a small generator "just in case" - which will keep the freezer and sump pump going. Glad you are all OK!

    Hugs, Teddy
