|I need a nap now!|
Hailey survived 5/7 nights in a row with fireworks. (Thank you living in cottage country and Canada Day). She was nervous but in control. However, Tuesday night she was convinced the world was ending.
It happened like this:
Tuesday was probably the hottest day of the year (or close to it) with a temperature of about 30 C/86 F (36 C/ 97 F with the humidity). It was the first day we wished we had a/c. In our part of the world, hot days like this often result in storms.
Tuesday night, the temperature started to drop, so we opened all the windows on the main floor. The rain started. We didn't have thunder but we had wind. Over the evening the wind got stronger and stronger and by about 11 pm it was very, very windy. Since moving to the country Hailey has developed a fear of wind.
It was about this time that Miss Hailey Bug lost her mind and started barking at the wind. We tried to comfort her. It didn't work. After a while I put her thunder shirt on. This did not help. She kept
running around the house barking and scratching at the door to go outside. (Interesting with fireworks she wants to be in and wind she wants to be out)
The Man and I (who were trying to sleep and sleeping between the barks and this had gone on for over an hour) had to decide if we close all the windows and see if that helped her, but it wouldn't allow the house to cool down, or try something new.
The Man decided to try something new. He took off her thunder shirt, put her in our closet and closed the door. We knew if she wanted out we would hear her. She also happens to have a bed there because in the past just being in the closet has helped her.
She slept amazingly well after this and Man let her out when he got up Wednesday morning. She was happy, calm and hadn't done any destruction to the closet.
Lesson learned, if Hailey is stressed out, lock her in the closet. Something about this makes her feel safe.
It helped us too because we were all able to get some sleep and keep the windows open. This was great because the temperature fell to about 12 C/54 F overnight and the house temperature dropped about 10 degrees and is now a place we all are comfortable with.
The temperatures look a bit lower in the mid 20s (80s) so hopefully the storms are behind us for a day or two!
