The Night The World Was Ending

I need a nap now!

Hailey survived 5/7 nights in a row with fireworks. (Thank you living in cottage country and Canada Day). She was nervous but in control. However, Tuesday night she was convinced the world was ending.

It happened like this:

Tuesday was probably the hottest day of the year (or close to it) with a temperature of about 30 C/86 F  (36 C/ 97 F with the humidity). It was the first day we wished we had a/c. In our part of the world, hot days like this often result in storms.

Tuesday night, the temperature started to drop, so we opened all the windows on the main floor. The rain started. We didn't have thunder but we had wind. Over the evening the wind got stronger and stronger and by about 11 pm it was very, very windy. Since moving to the country Hailey has developed a fear of wind.

It was about this time that Miss Hailey Bug lost her mind and started barking at the wind. We tried to comfort her. It didn't work.  After a while I put her thunder shirt on. This did not help. She kept
running around the house barking and scratching at the door to go outside. (Interesting with fireworks she wants to be in and wind she wants to be out)

The Man and I (who were trying to sleep and sleeping between the barks and this had gone on for over an hour) had to decide if we close all the windows and see if that helped her, but it wouldn't allow the house to cool down, or try something new.

The Man decided to try something new. He took off her thunder shirt, put her in our closet and closed the door. We knew if she wanted out we would hear her. She also happens to have a bed there because in the past just being in the closet has helped her.

She slept amazingly well after this and Man let her out when he got up Wednesday morning. She was happy, calm and hadn't done any destruction to the closet.

Lesson learned, if Hailey is stressed out, lock her in the closet. Something about this makes her feel safe.

It helped us too because we were all able to get some sleep and keep the windows open. This was great because the temperature fell to about 12 C/54 F overnight and the house temperature dropped about 10 degrees and is now a place we all are comfortable with.

The temperatures look a bit lower in the mid 20s (80s) so hopefully the storms are behind us for a day or two!

  1. That's great news, finding a place for Hailey that she feels safe in.
Strange she frightened of the wind though, I luffs the wind in my furs, brings out all the great smells from miles away

  3. it sounds crazy, but the closet is Easy's "bomb shelter" too...maybe it feels like a cave that he sleeps there while we have the great thunder&firework drama outside :o)

Well I never... I chose to sleep in a 'cave' (boxroom) as it feels cocooning and I sleep much better, particularly if there is storming happening outside; a regular thing round here! - you are a gal after my own heart Hailey!!! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  6. We doggies sometimes sleep in the bathroom on stormy nights because there are no windows in there and the thunder isn't as loud. Hope the weather improves where you are!

  7. Mommy once had a dog that used to like to jump and hide in the tub whenever there was thunder. So, she would close the shower curtain. It was his hiding spot, sitting in the tub with the shower curtain closed. (It seemed like an odd spot to hide, because he could just pull the plastic shower curtain open if he wanted to (it's not like it was a door or anything) -- butt it made him happy.)

  8. We had stom an windy rain too. Our degrees dropped from 23 C to 11.8 C in no time. Vaks don't like the sound of the rain, but he don't bark at it :)

  9. I am glad you found a spot that would work for her. Mom said she used to have a little terrier that got so scared of storms she would try to hide in the refrig. it was very sad.

  12. Glad you're going well! Poppy's not at all fussed with fireworks or storms, so she's fine and we don't have too many fireworks going off in England (twice a year and less if the weather turns on displays).

  14. The first place Arty heads to when he is anxious or out of sorts is his "den". We are so glad Hailey got some relief (along with you and your hubby!)

  20. Our golden retriever Sheba is afraid of the wind too. Luckily so far she only paces around some and doesn't get overly stressed. That's a good idea about the closet though...we have a decent size one that we could put a dog bed in if need be. I'm going to remember that!
