The Circle of Life

I am sad to report that Junior the Groundhog died Wednesday morning.

This is what happened:

Lady, without thinking about Junior, took the pups out to play on Wednesday morning. She had Lee on her tie out (meaning she wasn't attached to anything) let her have some free time and the ball for Phod. It was only the second day since Phod cut his foot that he has been able to play ball.

Lady opened the front door.

In the time it took Lady to walk down the step and take the 20 steps around the house, Hailey had caught and killed Junior. Junior didn't make a sound, so she did it quickly.

Lady then took Zaphod back into the house and told Man.

Lady was able to get Lee to drop it by the time Man came up. When Man went over she picked it up again but dropped it.

Lady took Lee into the house while Man took Junior to his final resting place.

The Man was very upset at Lady for not having Lee on leash and Lee for hunting.

I, the Lady, see it as the circle of life. It is unfortunate and if I could go back, I would put her on leash. Although given her strength and determination this may not have helped and I think she would have eventually caught him (the incident with the Man as well as him right up by the patio door repeatedly suggest to me that he was going to meet an untimely end).

Fast forward a few hours and imagine Man's surprise when he got home from work and Hailey was freaking out because there was another little Groundhog teasing her through the window. We have named this one Lazarus. Let's see how long he lasts (to help I will always take Hailey out on leash!).

Lazarus - teasing the dogs

  1. A nice chain link fence would stop all that worry - keep the critters out and doggies in : :)

  2. I'm so sorry, but you can't always stop a dog's natural instinct. We found that out during our Great Dane days - we had a lot of incidents like these.

  4. Oh that's too bad, but when you gave dogs this can happen. We've had a squirrel, a few birds, a mole and a river rat meet their end by coming into the yard at a bad time.

  5. Yep, we have problems here with the Rabbits behind the shop, Dad always checks before opening the gate out their for us. Poor junior, glad he gots a good resting place!

We are FINALLY back online, what else did we miss?

  6. Frankly, we think Lee did a great job deading that Groundhog. SHE never appreciates it when we dead something....just don't understand. Look out Lazarus!

Looks like you've got a big time spammer there.

  7. THIS is Frankie Furter... and the "KID".... we are using Cussin Sarge's puter... claws... we are at His House...

OKAY... now see we think that JUNIOR actually had a Deaded Wish and that this was MEANT to be...
We think that Deaded Junior is probably giving LAZARUS... some much needed advice about how to avoid the NEED to EARN that Name of his.

  8. Wow, I have mixed emotions, on one hand I want to say "whoohoo you deaded a groundhog" on the other hand I want to say "ewwwwwwwwwwwwww and yuck". I am sorry that Lazarus is teasing you, I hope he doesn't have to live up to his name.

  9. uh oh :(
that's not good. Sometimes you just can't help it though I suppose.
me and my huskies came face to face with a beaver a while back, (in my yard) and Koda got out of his collar somehow, luckily he didn't kill the beaver, but really, I think we were more scared of it, then it was of us, because it went all kung foo, making these crazy noises and stuff!

  10. We hope taking Lee out on leash does not result in a longer arm for you. BOL! RIP Junior.

  11. Sounds like those groundhogs are not giving Lee her personal (and hunting) space ;-)!

  12. So sorry about Jr! I have many critters in my yard... and my neighbors fed 18 stray cats at one time. Let's just day, been there, done that. Sad but, it IS the circle of life.

Thanks for your kind comments on my blog!

  13. Best groundhog name ever! It is sad, but it is also mother nature.

  14. Oh that's sad, we don't get those over here. xxoxxxx

  15. My dogs have caught squirrels, chipmunks and birds. Makes me so sad. It's why I wrote a post about saving wildlife. It made me feel better to think I might be able to help prevent it from happening to other critters. Feel free to share.)

  16. Hi hi hi! Ojo here! Good bye Junior! Fluffy the grey squirrel got dead this morning by way of my mouth too. Perhaps they are playing together in rodent heaven?
