Mischief Monday - She Missed An Important Day - by Lee

I am giving Lady the stink eye because she missed a very important day yesterday. It was National Black Dog Day. As many of you know black dogs are the last to be adopted and more black dogs don't make it out of the shelter than any other colour. Black cats are also often overlooked too.

People believe black animals appear more aggressive and don't photograph as well.  I think I photograph fantastically, especially in the sun. So while we are a day late, we wanted to help bring attention to an issue that is near and dear to my heart. Please don't judge a dog or cat by his or her colour.

A very happy black dog,  Lee (who wants you all to know cousin Emma is staying with us for a week, she has already had an accident in the middle of the night - on the floor and not the bed -, so she is going to be making me look good, and she is also mostly black!)

  6. Millie is celebrating with you Hailey. Even as a cute puppy Millie was overlooked for a long time until our pawrents saw her and fell in love.

  7. I think that black furkids are beautiful and their coats always seem to have lots of gleaming shine!

  8. Not choosing an animal because it doesn't photograph well? What's wrong with people?

We've had a few black and tuxedo cats (all angels now), and they were just wonderful. If we weren't retiring from the pet-ownership business (36 cats in 40 years... I think we've done out part), I wouldn't hesitate to adopt a black cat. Mary had a black dog growing up, and he was a good dog, too.

  10. My first dog, as an adult, was a black dog adopted from a shelter. She was a black lab and shepherd mix, and while just a puppy when I adopted her, she grew up to be the smartest dog I have ever known. I still miss my Mojo, even though she's been gone 11 years now.

  15. Happy Black Dog Day! While none of us are black, Momma has had lots of black pups in her life and loved them bunches. Momma says that a red backdrop is also good for photographing black dogs. Our dark brindle fosters all photographed beeYOUtifully on our red couch!

  17. That sounds like mischief on your person's part to miss such an important day! Ojo pointed this day out as well, but I argued that she is only black on her back and her face. Her red-brown and grey coat parts mean that she doesn't count, right? (Ojo still disagrees because it was her face in photos that our person saw when she expressed interest in bringing her up from Alabama Pound. She had very sweet eyes. But still, a black-Dog face. I'm not sure if I buy this or not.)

Either way, Cousin Lee, you are very beautiful in the sunshine!

  19. Wow! I wish we knew about this holiday when Miss Ginger was still with us. She had the most beautiful shiny black furs with tan points! So sorry your folks missed that day. But I think you can make any day a celebration for you!

  20. Even though Yin is solid black she is the most photogenic cat we have now. Mommy has had several black dogs and she thinks their furs are beautiful. We think you are beautiful and we are glad your Mom let you post even if it was a day late, we are usually late for stuffs too.
