Last Monday, we were out for our morning walk. It was early, so we were walking together. The dogs were very sniffy, which happens a lot. They were sniffing in the ditch when I heard a rustling and looked and saw this: (note: this is a dramatic reenactment and my first attempt at photo editing!):
That is right, about 2 feet in front of us was a skunk. I was able to quickly pull the dogs across the road, and no one was sprayed! It was a very close encounter! It would have been a horrible way to start the week!
Oh my goodness, is that really a skunk? We do not get them in Scotland but I have heard all about how if they spray you then you cannot get rid of the horrid smell for 87 million years. Or more.
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
How scary. One of the coolest magnets Mom ever got at a rescue event was a vet magnet with a recipe for skunk smell removal. We've all seen the recipes but who wants to google in an emergency.

How great that Pepe Le Pew was not in the mood for a perfume pawty :o) btw: my dad once brought a skunk home, he thought it is a racoon...maybe he better hat read an animal lexikon instead of archie comics :o)
ReplyDeleteElsie my Yorkshire Terrier normally encounters Squirrels but nothing as exotic as a Skunk. Well done on your find.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on your photo-editing. I'm so glad no one got sprayed. Ugh! Getting out skunk smell is a nasty business.
ReplyDeletePat
You are lucky - Barkley got sprayed once years ago and that is NOT an experience you wish upon anyone. The photo edit was so cute!
ReplyDeleteYikes!! Great reenactment photo :)
ReplyDeleteWe have so many skunks in our neighborhood. Because we are in a suburban area there are no real predators and the population is skyrocketing. The other night I was walking Ruby and one ran right out in front of us - I thought we were goners, but fortunately he didn't spray us
ReplyDeleteWHOA!!! Sure glad that worked out like it did!!!
ReplyDeleteCammie!
You are so right. Glad you got away unscathed. That FRESH skunk smell is sickening.
ReplyDeleteWhew...that was a very close call!!!

Oh yikes! I'm glad you were able to get away! We had that sort of thing happen to us when we lived in the country with the inlaws!
ReplyDeleteEEEEK! We quite often smell that skunks have "passed through" our yard in the mornings but only RARELY do we see one. Thankfully!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sammy
OH, that is our Mom's worst fear!!! We live near a donkey farm and there appear to be some resident skunks there too. They always seem to prowl the area on the night before trash pickup. Mom has to go out on the deck in the dark in the morning to bang her feet and try to scare them away just in case they are in our kingdom. Mom says trying to get THAT smell out of our very dense fur would NOT be much fun at all.
ReplyDeleteGlad you escaped safely.
Woos - Ciara and Lightning
Amanda: Whoa! Glad y'all didn't get sprayed.
ReplyDeleteBarbarella: We have never come that close to a skunk before, we've only smelled them.
Yikes! We're glad you avoided trouble!
ReplyDeleteOMD, it's one of our mom's worst nightmares! Fortunately, none of us has ever been sprayed before! Thank doG you got away!
ReplyDeleteThat sure was a close call! Glad nobody needed a tomato juice bath.
ReplyDeleteCrikey ... A close call, aye? We don't have those critters here? Do they really smell that bad???????? Great job on the re-enactment!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! Not even I want to mess wid a skunk! We have them here in the city. They eat the food left out for the community cats.
ReplyDeleteHappy Gotcha Day, Hailey! Happy 6th Blog Anniversary, guys!
ReplyDeleteWow, you were so close to the skunk. Glad you were safe!
Momo & Pinot
Oh yikes!
ReplyDeleteYIKES, these "close encounters" really are heart-stopping, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteWe get skunks around here. We can smell them sometimes and it drives us crazy. We had our windows open the other night and skunk smell brought Bailey out of a deep sleep and he started barking. Fortunately it was windy and the smell dissipated quickly

Ewwwwwe! Skunks are the stinkiest! We gets to smell lots of them around here, butts Ma has only seen one through the window. She always has thought abouts having that skunk smell removal stuffs on hand, maybe she will gets some this week. She's just not convinced that tomato juice will do the trick! BOL
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Ruby ♥
OMD! I would have panicked and gotten us all sprayed! LOL! LOL!
ReplyDeletePHEW!! Close call! We've never encountered one of those, but way back when Momma was a pup, a rabid skunk came up to their house and bit several of their dogs.
ReplyDeleteWow! That must have been very scary, more for Mom than for you doggies! Ghostwriter hates that skunk smell.
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes! You were lucky. This is one of my big fears with walking the dogs so early. I think we had a close encounter last year, but I didn't hang around long enough to be sure. :-)
