Hailey The Magnificent

First, did you see that Hailey won the 2016 Blogville Demolition Derby over at Oreo's?  Congratulations to all the participants for a great race!

One of the things we have been trying with our girl, is a little off leash training. We realize she isn't going to be a dog who can be off leash as much as Phod, her hunting drive is too strong. However, we believe she can have a little off leash time.

We have been picking times when she doesn't appear distracted by anything in the yard (aka not in hunting mode) and when the chances of deer/skunks/etc. appearing in our yard are lower (so mid day and not morning and evening).  We stay near by and have her drag a leash so we can step on it if hunting mode kicks in. It has been going well and she has been able to be off leash for 5 minutes or so with no incidents.

This makes us happy!

  1. we use the step-leash too, Easy is the same character like Lee (the perfect match in any way). we used it yesterday too as we met a gordon setter... we called Easy back and we thought it is ok... but the sneaky guy ran around the car to tease the strange dog from behind....what a stinker!

what a great plan and I am sure that Lee is appreciative of those trust-moments too! YAM xx

  3. Well done!!! A little at a time and you can build from there.

  4. I'm sure it makes her happy too! Half of my collies can be trusted off leash, and half cannot. Maybe someday...

  5. Congratulations! Mom would let us off leash if you paid her

  9. That's a very good plan. Hope it works. Mom says she would never be brave enough to let us off leash without a good fence. That running instinct is just too strong.

  10. Nice going Hailey! Daisy could take a lesson from you... ;)

  11. Hailey you were a maniac in that demo derby! Glad you are getting some off leash time

  12. We're terriers, so we understand the prey drive. Luckily, we don't have much wildlife where we walk. But good work Hailey...Free walking is the best.

  13. Congrats on winning the demo derby, Hailey.

  14. First a derby winner, and now running around off-leash. Way to go, Hailey! ~ Amy

  15. WooooHoooo! OMD, looks like you gots a HUGE yardie to run in gurl! I gots a smaller, butts fenced front yardie with mostly dead grass that I run in when Gpa is watchin' me. (Ma doesn't likes it cause I bark my arse off at any dog walkin' by...Gpa doesn't give a crap! BOL)

    1. Almost forgots ~ CONGRATS on the Derby win!!!!

  16. Congrats to Hailey for the derby win and getting some off leash time.

  17. Lucky you to be off-leash, Hailey! That's huge and congrats on your win!

  18. Great job, Hailey! We do a bit of off-leash training with Rita as well when we have a chance. I would probably never completely trust her off-leash, but it's good training in case something happens!
