Mischief Monday - The Pandemic

Lady is so astonished to see so many of our plans living 'normal lives' on social media. It is a reminder to us about how bad things are here. We have are having record number of cases. ICUs are at capacity. Children's Hospitals are treating adults. Vaccine roll out is slow. The only silver lining, if there is one, is less people are dying, but the life long injury to some who have live isn't understood yet. Lady read about there first double lung transplant to a Covid survivor recently. The possible long term damage for survivors is just not known.

In the province we live in, Quebec, things are 'ok'. Schools are closed. Stores have rules. We wear masks. We have a curfew. Things in the province across the river where Lady works, Ontario, are scarier.  They have a much stricter lockdown starting today. Schools are closed, more stores are closed, outdoor spaces are limited. If you are reading this first thing Monday morning, it is possible Lady is trying to pass through the first checkpoint of her life. The provincial boarders are closed to anyone who is not essential, so Lady, armed with her letter, hopes to make it across to work. While she can do much of her work online, there are times she needs to be on the ground with her clients.

In happier news, Lady was able to receive her first dose of vaccine, Moderna, on the weekend. While she had some mild side effects, she said it is the price she is willing to pay to get back to 'normal'. She got to go because she is a health care worker. It is hoped our Man will get his by the end of June. As someone who can easily work at home and has no underlying health conditions he we will be the last group to go.  Most of Canada is doing doses 4 months apart so it will be early August before Lady has her second.

All of this has us a little down. Lady is working long hours as well, so as always we are desperately behind visiting. Lady made a rule early in the pandemic and one she has only broken 2 or 3 times in the past year, she will spend a minimum of 4 hours per day, awake, without a screen in her face. so this means many days, after she has spent 10 hours working, she needs to completely step away from screens (and visiting all of you). While she misses you all, she knows this, along with her exercise and chocolate habit are what is keeping her going.

To a new week and one that is hopefully a day closer to the end of this (it is day 399 for us today!)

  2. so very sorry to read this, your part of the world sounds like what ours was last March. this dreaded disease just doesn't want to give up. you are right about not knowing the long term results of surviving a case of it. prayers Canada will get more vaccine so that you don't have to wait so long.

  3. Yes, chocolate. It is good you have resolved for yourself some "non screen" time. I am retired, so can only imagine the work + personal online time would be far, far too much. Prayers for all in Canada as you struggle, it is sad there (and here as well) that certain numbers of people still will not "do as they should" in the fight against this, it only serves to slow our progress to reach something sustainable. Thankful you have gotten a vaccine, though of course, as you well know we continue with all the rest of our good practices. To you and yours, stay safe.

  4. Sadly there are too many people living what looks like "normal" lives but really they are just helping to contribute to Covid mutating and infecting more people. It makes our mom mad to see so many people gathering shoulder to shoulder without masks on in certain parts of our country. They are just going to make this last longer than it's supposed to. You are lucky that your country at least has a stronger response when the numbers start going up. South of the border in the USA they keep opening things up even though case numbers are climbing again. Sadly we may be living like this for a long time. Okay...rant over.

  5. Slowly, slowly, slowly, things are opening up here in Scotland.
I hope Lady made it through the checkpoint OK. I have to keep reminding myself that there is a good reason for the police state conditions we've have had to put up with for so many months, and how fortunate I am not to have lived behind the Iron Curtain.
    Cheers! Gail.

  6. Yes Lady needs to look after her all aspects of her health. Down time from the screen is actually good advice for everyone. Sending hugs and head pats to all

As Gail mentions, things are unfreezing a bit here... but I have said it to a fair few folk already - and may become a broken record on this! - there is still a long way to go... As long as Lady, Man and you pups remain safe and well - and each and everyone of us - than we can count life as being pretty good... hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  8. So sorry conditions have deteriorated. In too many places in the US people have long been over lockdowns or restrictions of any kind and then they wonder why there are spikes in case numbers, all the while not wearing masks and continue to gather in groups. It's the same as it was during the panDAMNic of 1918 and just extends the duration of it while the virus says thanks and works overtime in churring out variants. Stay safe, sane and keep smiling.

  10. My cousin in Williamsburg, ON has told me how bad it is in the province. I remember Lady posted how many days you had been "isolating"——at that time, I believe it was 303 days. I counted our days when I read that, and ours was 301. Sunday was day 400. It's been quite an "adventure." Phod and Lee, I know you'll be extra helpful to Lady, since her days are hard....Stay safe, my friends!

  11. Things here in our state are bad. Cases are as high as they've ever been. And the people in charge are not imposing restrictions anymore. Probably because too many selfish people wouldn't follow them anyway. The mom is fully vaccinated but still only goes out when she has to...and still wears a mask. At least Canada is still taking this serious. Purrs for the Lady.

  12. Oh my, that sounds terrible. I hope that you made it through the checkpoint and were able to work. I hope that the strict rules slow down Covid. I am thinking of all of you. Please don't worry when you cannot visit. We understand.

  13. Oh noes. Things don't sound good there, butts at least they are trying. There are some states here that just won't. And things are mutating and getting bad there. We are lucky, in our state, we keep our masks on, and our vaccines are flowing very well now, so that is helping too. I hopes things get better there soon. I'll keep my paws crossed for you guys, and stay safe my furiends.
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

  14. We are all so fed up with all of this virus stuff! But we've got to hang in there and hope things will get better. Those of us who work at the nursing home are hoping that in the coming years, the covid will be treated like the flu, with once a year vaccinations. We can only hope and pray!
