Dear pals,
When I was younger, I had to have a slow bowl to slow me down. I would eat anything and everything so quickly, I would throw it up.
Over the last couple of years, I am eating slower, and need a regular bowl. It is too much effort to use the slow bowl.
In the past few months I have also gotten extremely picky. While I have had phases like this before, this seems to have stuck. I don't want boring kibble. I will pick out pieces I don't like and leave them all over the kitchen floor. I can go a whole day and barely eat one cup of food. However, I will take most human food and treats. I am being picky not stupid.
Maybe Dragon will enjoy this boring kibble |
This causes my Lady and Man worry, so they has been trying things. They have changed the flavour of kibble and usually have 2 types on the go at once. This week (because Phod started being picky too) they put a little beef broth on it. This seems to increase the likelihood we both will eat most of it.
Lady wonders if anyone else has had a dog get really picky in their golden years? Did you find anything that helped?
da nelly said you can live with him... to have a sis what throws food on the floor is his greatest dream ...
ReplyDeleteWell, we have cardigan welsh corgis who never stop eating due exclusively to age, but recently, the older cardi, who had lost a tooth weeks earlier (with no apparent ill effect), started eating very slowly and dropping kibble on the floor. In his case, he had an infection along his gum line. When I checked his mouth, I could neither see it, nor did he show discomfort when I ran my fingers around his mouth. The vet identified it. I would suggest a checkup (just in case it is something a vet could find, mouth or not), due to her age. If all appears fine, and she has decided simply to be picky, I'm full of suggestions :)
ReplyDeleteI have had 6 large dogs and none of them ever quit eating any of their food. This sounds odd to me and like Fay said maybe a vet visit? first you could test other dog food. also just had a thought, if it was a tooth problem she would not eat any of it. maybe the kibble has changed from what it was? maybe try small bag of a different food and mix with kibble to get her used to it and see if that works

ReplyDeleteJade only stopped being food-oriented in her last six months (at 14 years) so never really faced this trouble (except the picking out of the ungodly carrots I kept insisting were good for her...) I agree with Fay and MS, a vet check might just be advisable. If for no other reason than to establish a benchmark to measure against from now on into senior phase. Phod is quite possibly just imitating, but no harm having that senior-oriented inspection for him too. As for the food selection - if mixing your food into theirs does the trick, go for it. I think one can be too precious about food segregation! Will put out some POTP for you all. YAM xx
I have never been a picky eater and I feel so bad that you are.
ReplyDeleteOh, it isn't just the Golden Years...Sunny has gotten picky too...and will get sick if we change her food too quickly. Mama has taken to putting chicken broth in her kibble, and that seems to help.

Oh Lee and Phod....my only K9 experience was with Toto who was not a all picky. He ate anything that did not eat him. Sending hugs to the peeps

Gail is not at all an expert but agrees with the suggestions that a vet check might be warranted. Neither Bertie nor Hamish ever became picky as they aged. Nobby was a picky eater at the start of his life, but has definitely overcome that phase.
ReplyDeleteIf they both eat the same kibble, maybe there is something "off" about that one bag. Phantom did get very picky when he was older. Mom tried a variety of things, baby food, some of those tiny trays of wet dog food that are pricey, broth added to kibble, and that stuff that comes in a tube, Fresh Pet, maybe. She had to switch things up a lot to get hime to eat.

We've been lucky to never have a problem with picky eating due to old age. Good work though to get beef broth added to your food. BOL!
ReplyDeleteOur parents hate when we won't eat, but our palate become more refined when we age. We need something better (At least that's what I say)
