Mischief Monday - Fraidy Cats

This is my 80lbs, 9 or so year old German Shepherd Mix freaking out.
He is trying to crawl onto my lap while I was creating my nieces's birthday story.
He was so stressed he drooled all over me.

He never use to be fearful, but thanks to Hailey he has become almost as fearful as she has. He just is less destructive about it.

What caused all this fear?

On Saturday we left the house in a car for about 30 minutes. Literally as we were pulling in (we were able to open the garage door, but not close it), the power went out. It was out for about 10 minutes. Later in the day, the power flickered and was out for maybe one minute. This picture was taken during that time.

The power going out is the scariest thing ever for Phod.

Earlier in the week, when the Man and I were both on calls, our carbon monoxide detector decided to tell the whole world it was at the end of its life. The beeping caused Phod to be scared in his passive way and Lee to start digging things off the shelf, digging me. I excused myself from my meeting and put the device outside so they couldn't hear it until we had time to deal with it. Once they couldn't hear it, they settled.

I am wondering if they will both need anti-anxiety meds when we re-enter the real world!

  2. so sorry dear Phod and Lee that things are so scary. I am wondering if the stay at home has changed all of us and the dogs. Big never followed us from room to room, he picked his spot and slept. now that he is never alone, he stays close, i think they sense our own anxiety, when I start to feel overwhelmed he comes to me and puts his head in my lap. I just noticed this last week. before the virus he never did that. it is like he if finely tuned to my feelings, when bob and i shout at each other, he doesn't know which one to comfort...

  3. Oh dear, poor Phod. We do hope he settles down again and things start getting back to some version of normal soon.

this is sad to read. Unlike children, our pets don't necessarily settle with comforting - if anything, it exacerbates the behaviour, for it brought attention. A difficult one for you to negotiate. I have every confidence you will find the way! YAM xx

Oh nose I does dat too wif da power going out, smoke detectors, thunder & lightening, fireworks, da wind blowing too hard, etc, etc....Mama gots me some pet.releaf soft chews from our local pet bakery buts they sell them online if ya wants to give them a shot (I like da carob and peanut butters da bestest). They help a ton. I take one efury morning and then if there is an event dat is making me nervous then her gives me one or two more and it calms me right down :)

  9. Every night when Mom or Dad sets the security system, Lightning howls on and on until the beeping stops. Timber seems to be developing a fear of thunder storms. He seems to have become more edgy since he lost his sister:( It can be a scary world for pups too. Maybe when the power goes out, Phod hears some noise that humans can't detect.

    Happy Memorial Day.

  12. We're sorry to hear Phod was so scared and hope things go better for him. It would seem that some meds might help him too.
