Mischief Monday - Finding The Right Food

Disclaimer: This post contains a non-graphic discussion about poop! Also, no specific foods will be named in this post as we don't want our feeding choices to have any influence on yours and we don't want to give any brand free advertising!

Man, I can't believe she is going to talk about my poop habits!

For Phod's allergies, he needs to eat a fish based diet. We had found a Canadian high quality brand that they both did well on. Then we couldn't get it anymore, so for the past few months we have tried a lot of different foods. Note: We always buy high quality foods, but just because they are high quality, doesn't mean they are the best for us.

Some of the first foods gave some of us very loose poop. So they were ruled out. Then we went back to a brand we used before Phod needed fish food, but got the fish food and both did well. Instead of doing the smart thing, and staying with this food, we thought we would try a slightly cheaper food. While the poops are not loose, there are a lot of them. Lee has been a once a day pooper (occasionally a 2 times a day pooper) her whole life and she has become a 3-4 times a day pooper. Phod, who usually poops 2-3 times (and always has), is going way more (harder to know exactly as he can go deep into the bush by himself). Then, on Friday, for the first time in over 6 years (he has lived with us for 6.5 years), Phod had a poop accident in the house while we were at work. (He thinks he is in trouble, but he is not, because for him to do this, we know he had to be desperate).

This lead Lady back to the drawing boards. We live very rural and Lady has a love for online shopping. So at 6 am on Saturday (yes, she was up, she had her 8 hours of sleep so was ready to go), she started looking for an online pet food shop. She found one that carried the great Canadian food (at a price slightly cheaper than she had been paying when she could get it at the store), that will ship for free (for orders over $79, so she bought 2 big bags).

We are all looking forward to having the right food and not to be having so many poop issues! We are also looking forward to trying online pet shopping!

  4. I fully understand Lady and the search for the right food. it is really important to find just the right one. we have always fed all our dogs the same food, we fed it to Big Boy when we got him 5 months ago, he was not going enough. once a day is not enough. our change was simple, we got the same brand, but instead of for 7 and up we got for 5 and up PLUS we got large dog, not medium dog. now his poop is perfect. twice a day is good... sometimes 3. Big is lucky because we are retired. back a few years ago, we did not know Jake ate a very large avocado from the yard, at that time we had 3 dogs, and had to crate Jake when leaving them alone. he was broken hearted because he had the only accident ever in 13 years, inside his crate... so glad you found the online shop

  10. It is great when you can find the right food for your dogs. We used to have to shop online, but now we can get our favourite food locally. And we might add fish is a favourite with us.

  11. These poop matters are very important and should be discussed openly and without embarrassment. I am a 2-3 times a day poop man myself, almost always a nice firm (but not too firm) consistency. And the colour is a darkish brown, except the time when I was a pup and ate a water-soluble blue coloured pencil...

  12. Oh, we hope this works for Phod and Hailey!!! Mom is toying with the idea of switching our food, but she says it is a daunting task deciding which one to go with.

  14. We hope the new food will be a hit and pooping will be back to normal around the household. It's great that you are able to get the right food even if your store nearby doesn't have it. Thanks for the share. Have a great day.

  17. Good luck with finding the right food. We were so happy with rabbit based food and then it became almost impossible to find in a dry formula here in the US. So we switched proteins. We have something that works now, so we try to not stray from success....too much!
