Mischief Monday - Winter

We give the mischief award of the week to the weather.  As we mentioned last week, we had record snow this year.

This week we had some crazy unusual weather (these are Ottawa stats so may be a little off for where we live as we are a little north, but gives you an idea):
  • We had the most snow melt in one day in 44 years. We lost 28 cm/11 inches in a day.
  • On the 23rd we had the warmest 23rd on record at almost 12C/54F - this day was the 4th warmest day ever in a February.
  • We had a rare February thunderstorm (Lady slept through it, but Hailey was stressed which made Phod stressed). Between 1953-2010 there had only be 3 other February thunderstorms reported.
  • We had the wettest February 25th on record with 16.9 mm/.27inches of rain.

After warm and rain, imagine what things are like when it all froze again yesterday (it was -15C/5F when we went for our walk).  It is a big icy mess.  This week we have rotated between slush and ice.

Our front yard as of yesterday

Our driveway aka accidental skating rink as of yesterday. The ice sure shines under the winter sun! Thank goodness for my icers for my boots

The weather this week looks like a mix of rain and snow and temperatures between 6C/42F and -18C/0F. The joys of being Canadian!

22 days until spring!

  5. The snow looks lovely but the ice maybe not so good! We have not had one flake of snow here this winter just rain and wind :-( Hope the weather stops mischief making and you can enjoy some warm sun soon. Nose licks and love from Moth xx

  13. Oh, ant that ice can be so treacherous!!! They just said on our nightly news that we are most likely not going to see a big snowfall this winter - heck, we would even like a few inches (but not Mom). Be careful out there.

  14. It's been crazy here too! Warm one day, cold the next. Any snow that falls only lasts a couple days. Ghostwriter remembers winters in Buffalo NY back in the late 70's, early 80's. Once she saw a blizzard roll in off of Lake Erie and it was thundering. Very odd!

  15. Yes it has been a crazy year. We just got rid of all our snow and then it dumped on us Thursday and Friday. Spring needs to hurry up

  16. It is SO beautiful where you live even with the snow. We have not had an accumulation of more than 1`/2 inch of snow since Dec. 17 - a record in Chicago since 1880. What we did get turned to slush immediately as it was so warm out.

I want to snoot some snow - can you mail me some?

  18. Wow! You have had a lot of extremes! Our mom is petrified of ice. She freezes in place and won't move! She is such a woos!

  19. All that ice is no fun. We've had the mildest February on record here and are a little disappointed at our lack of snow. Could you send some of yours down to us?

  20. Yup, that looks quite familiar! We at least have a clear driveway, everything melted there. So at least I can get to my car safely.
