Mischief Monday - It Happened

Lady's worst fear came true on the morning of Friday the 13th. Ok, not her worst fear, but one of her many, many, many, many fears.

It happened like this - without thinking, she opened the garage door, Hailey screamed and Phod ran. Lazarus the groundhog was not only out of his hole, he was way, way, way out of his hole.

The poor little guy ran as fast as he could, with Phod on his heels, Hailey screaming and the Lady yelling at Phod to stop and for the groundhog to run. About 1 foot from the groundhogs hole, Phod picked him up by the back end. Lady yelled to drop it, and Phod put the squirming groundhog down and it dove into the hole.

A careful inspection of Zaphod showed no injuries.

We haven't seen Lazarus since. We don't know how seriously he was injured. Phod did not appear to be rough with the groundhog, he didn't shake him or anything. We will continue to watch for him.

In the meantime, Phod always goes out on leash until Lady has inspected to make sure there is no wildlife around. If there isn't he can be off!

I would never do such a thing, look at how sweet I am!

PSA: Remember on May 23rd Dory is hosting a blog hop in memory of our dear friend Whitley.

  5. You do look VERY innocent Phod...I'm sure it was just a little accident and you didn't mean to hurt the groundhog, how were you to nose he wasn't a fast runner

  7. it is tough - Phod was just doing what his instincts told him - to protect his territory - and we hope Mr Groundhog just got a scare more than anything

  9. OMD! Poor Lazarus must be scared something awful now! But Phod shouldn't feel so bad...I would've chased that groundhog too, though I believe my years may have slowed me down enough that I would not have actually caught him.

  15. Wow! You caught a big old ground hog? We call them wood chucks. Be careful, Phod, they can be really nasty! We're still searching for the rabbit hole that all those bunnies came from last week!

  18. Oh dear, poor Lazarus. But it's not Phod's fault. He did what he was supposed to!

  19. What a good dog Phod was to drop Lazarus when you told him to! That's a pretty good prize for a dog and I'm sure a lot of dogs wouldn't have let go of it. We hope Lazarus is OK, it sounds like Phod probably didn't hurt him much if he only had him for a few seconds.
We had a porcupine hanging around in our yard - now that was scary! Luke tried to go after him even when on leash, but he also listened to me when I told him "no". Thank goodness - I might not have been able to hold onto him since he's so strong and it was sudden.

  22. Years ago, soon after I fenced my backyard, Ceilidh and Tucker scared a rabbit to death (or shook it); there was not a mark on it. I think the normal escape routes were blocked by the fence and they got it cornered. I felt bad for days.

  23. I'd luv to get a groundhog. Unfortunately, I'm just stuck hunting lizards dat sneak in da sunroom.

  24. These things happen - it's all in the dog's nature to hunt. We both scared Mom to death one day when we both stuck our heads into the ground cover around our big spruce tree and came out with a big old possum in our mouths. Of course, we got the "leave it" command and that possum waddled away:(

  28. Oh my dog. We had a groundhog in our yard last week. That chunky little groundhog guy can run fast. He escaped under the fence. Phod u must be a really fast runner to catch Lazirus like that.

  33. Hi hi hi! Ojo here! We are sorry we missed so many posts and happenings! Our person had a sore neck and could not sit at the computer to help us with blogs. Also our Walks were very slow and mostly boring. But we are happy to say that she is now better and our Walks are fun again, and we are BACK!

Handsome Phod, I will say first that you are indeed very sweet. So am I. BUT I caught a mouse in the field just yesterday! It was awesome! So good luck with your ground hog!!!
