Surviving Last Week - Doggie Day Care

As mentioned, to help survive last week, I put the dogs in Doggie Day Camp and one night of boarding at PetSmart. I picked this place (over the place we have been using for boarding) because it was closer to where I work part-time and their drop off/pick up hours are more flexible.

On the drive in, Hailey managed to get out of her new car harness. I realized this, when driving down the highway at 100 km/62 miles per hour and she was standing on the consult between the front seats. She was then very anxious until we got past where we would go to the vet and then settled. She was excited/terrified when we pulled up at the centre. Signing them in was a nightmare as they were excited and other dogs were coming in . . . Leaving was as crazy because a puppy class was walking through the lobby to go back to the training room.

Apparently they had a good time. The staff member who brought them out when I picked them up said they were wonderful and friendly. They mostly played together. He said that while he enjoyed them both, Zaphod had a special place in his heart because he would come over, put his head on his leg for love. He was very cuddly. Sometimes Hailey would come over and push him out of the way to get love too. That is what happens at home. I was sooooo thrilled to hear that Zaphod trusted these "strangers" enough to get love. He has come so far from the nervous guy who first walked through our door.

The drive home, both slept. They actually slept the next 2 days, they were so tired. They were no worse for wear. I was able to spend a day without worrying about them at the hospital, and then work the next day without worrying about them. It worked out and I am not going to feel guilty about it any more. I only wish this was cheaper. I put them in day camp for 2 days, one night overnight, and 2 snack kongs, this was $142 Cdn/$108 US. Our regular boarding place would have been about $74 Cdn/$55 US for that time.

  13. Well, at least you know there is somewhere they can go so you'll have peace of mind. We always go to the same kennel, it is VERY expensive...like $1000, when SHE travels for a few weeks BUT, SHE knows we are well-cared for and we don't really mind going, so it's just budgeted into the travel costs. Impressed with a hand-written note and not just a form ticked off.

  15. Such brave doggies! When Mom went to the hospital to get a brand new knee, I stayed with a neighbor and her dog. I have never been boarded. I'm pretty sure I'd be afraid. ...but not as afraid as Mom.

  16. Well Hailey and Phod, on one paw we must be impressed by the glowing report you received from Pet Smart. Well done for being so good and not giving the Lady any extra worries last week. But on the other paw I would suggest you try just the odd bit of acting up next time, just in case your Lady gets the idea that she can take your cooperation with this whole boarding kennels thing for granted.
Oh, Gail is saying you are probably safe from being sent there too often given the prices…

  17. I would love to give your pups some lovin'. Bummer about the price, but it does sound like it worked out well. But... the hospital? I missed something... Is this related to the man's salmonella? Hope whoever is in the hospital is getting better!!

  19. With a report card like that, and two happy campers, we say the extra green papers were well worth it - just to know they were in good hands AND had fun at the same time.

  24. the 108 USA is cheap for that amount of time for 2 dogs. it is much more than that here. i don't know about our Petsmart, if they do that or not. i don't think so. glad you got a little less stress from life though and that they did so well.

  25. Wow, we just got finished reading all you, the Man and the pups have been through in the past week....Ugh! We are glad that the Man is on the mend, but can only imagine how stressful this all must have been for all of you!!

We used to board the pack at Petsmart in Austin until we realized we were spending more on boarding the dogs, than our hotel stay LOL. They did do a great job though!

Hang in there and I hope things get back to normal soon!

  27. Dear Lee and Phod's Lady,

That sounds like a good place. We have not found a good day care here. They are all packed full and the people control the Dogs with spray bottles and knees to the chest. We think you are so, so lucky that you found this place! It is indeed too bad that it costs so much of that thing called money. But I'm sure our cousins appreciate it!

    Licks,
    Cobi
