I had thought that having pets was suppose to have relaxing effect on you, but Zaphod proved that sometimes it doesn't.The scene: A lovely Sunday morning. The sun was out, it wasn't too cold. It was nearing 11:30 but Lady was still in her pjs. The pups and I were in the driveway.
The antecedent: I am not sure what they original saw/heard, if it was the horses we haven't seen for months (and will be moving soon) or the car, but both wanted to be at the end of the driveway and Zaphod took off onto the road right toward the neighbour's car.
The behaviour: I started screaming like a crazy woman and I think waving my arms. I couldn't run after him, he had gone through the snow. I was sure my heart was going to burst or stop!
The consequence: The neighbour, who was driving very slowly, saw him and he was not hit. I mouthed sorry to him (it must have been frightening for him too). Phod ran after the car and came back. He was very happy. He thought he had protected us. Hailey was angry and him and let's just say I didn't look pretty. I yelled at him. I was shaking and scared and angry. Not that it had any effect, he still had a big smile on his face.
Let's hope this doesn't become a habit.

ReplyDeleteAck! Jessie tries to run after cars too, which is why she isn't allowed off the leash if we're not fenced in.

ReplyDeleteOh my DOG! I would have lost it. There was one time when Sampson was small and he was off-leash in the yard, and it was a bit icy out. There was a large crow in the road and Sampson saw it and took off. Thankfully he is (was, I'm not sure if he still is or not) :-) with "STOP" so I screamed, "Sampson, STOP!" and he put the brakes on, stopping just before he slid into the road. It was so scary and my heart was in my throat, so I totally hear you!

Oh my word I was nearly as frightened as you when I read Phod ran. My word I guess it is true dogs live in the moment. Phod has a guardian angel for sure. I agree with Lily and Edward.
ReplyDeleteYears and years ago when we were owned by a mighty mini Dachshund we went to visit my parents at their lake house. At the time Daddy had 2 horses. Evidently Toto had spotted them from the car. My intent was to get his leash on him but he scrambled to the front seat when I opened my door. Crazy Dog ran toward the horses like they were mini Dachshunds. I screamed blood murder too. The only thing that saved his mighty mini butt from getting kicked to the next county was he was so small the horses could not see him and Toto was fast.

ReplyDeleteHow frightening. I'm always a slow driver around the neighborhood - you never know when a pet or child could dart out.
ReplyDeleteIt's pouring here and I'm using a vacation day to work on the kitchen remodel. Abby is happy to just sleep, warm and dry.

ReplyDeleteOur Mom would have reacted the same way. She is always worried we will slip out the front door and get hit too. Lucky for that big gate she has that keeps us away from the front door. Glad your frightening experience had a happy ending.
