As I mentioned yesterday, Hailey got to play off leash on Sunday. She did sneak out of the yard a bit on one of her runs. It is always hard to tell if she forgets, is just running with Phod or uses it as the opportunity to escape. We keep her leash on her so we can grab her if/when this happens. She was easily redirected back to our yard to play. I was proud of her for not going far and for coming back!

Hopefully, Hailey will realise that running free is work staying around the house! We used to have a dog that escaped the back yard every day and then went around front to sit on the door step. Maybe Hailey is just 'having a look'.

We just took our dog down the driveway to get the mail. Coming back, my husband let her off the leash so she could run and play in the snow. She had a ball.

Hi hi hi! Ojo here! Cousin Lee, I have a hard time too. I see something or smell something, or something just looks like fun, and I start to run and I completely forget about my people and everything else around me. I always come back... Except for the time it was stormy and I lost the scent of my person and Cobi had to put her nose down and find me. (She has training at tracking with her nose so is she very clever and did this when she was asked to!) I guess I am lucky in that I don't usually disappear for more than 30 seconds (unless I've caught something and I'm eating it!), and I almost always do big loops around and keep an eye and nose on my people, so I get to go off-leash every day. But only in very, very safe and very, very big places. So here is the moral of my very long story - keep coming back and don't go too far and keep making your Lady proud, and then you'll maybe get to go off-leash more often! Right?

ReplyDeleteGreat job on coming back. That is always hard. ;) Have you tried giving her a visual boundary and training that? Brown dawgs will run through our unfenced yard, but we have taught them visual boundaries. We use little lawn flags where there is no physical marker.
