Hailey vs. the Baby

As I have mentioned before, Hailey is not a dog who enjoys children. They stress her out. Hosting family Easter dinner was stressful. We had a plan if Hailey couldn't settle down.

The first 15 minutes were hell. Maggie was crying a little. Maggie's crying made Hailey bark. Hailey's barking made Maggie cry. It became a vicious circle.

Once Maggie settle, Hailey settled and other than a few barks throughout the visit, she did fine. She did bark if Maggie cried and she barked when people picked Maggie up or walked with her. She was fairly easily redirected. She particularly liked Maggie during lunch and had to be called away many times. She was even caught licking Maggie's hand.  Throughout the visit I gave her cookies for being calm.

Hailey peaking at Maggie's tray
Eventually, she was even able to relax and have a little nap. Overall, we give her a B+.

I am proud of her for not having to be put in the crate or on leash. Maybe, oh maybe, she can get use to kids. (We may have been helped by the fact that Maggie didn't crawl today, she can, but decided not to).

  4. Good job, Hailey! It can be hard to be around little ones...they make weird noises sometimes. But, if you behave...then it is great to be near them especially when they drop food!

I say Hailey dog, you did good getting that B+ and maybe like all the other things, the more you mingle with the activity, the more you will accept - or even get to like - it!!! Pleasing your peeps is always gonna bring B+nuses and maybe even A-xtra treats!!! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  10. Good job Hailey! Kids are scary to us doggies. When the grand peeps come over I get them to throw the ball for me but Stanley likes to ignore them. But now that they are older they aren't so bad BOL!

  15. Hi hi hi! Ojo here!

Cousin Lee, a B+ is a passing grade, well done! And little people are pawesome around feeding time, aren't they! Hurray! (Even if she didn't share the bacon!)

Handsome Phod, that is a tragedy about your Ball. We have many. Maybe I can send you one? But make sure to hide it so it doesn't get stolen again!

  19. it is hard for dogs that are not around kids a lot - Reilly doesn't mind kids but denny would dig a hole and bury himself if one came near him :)

  20. We think it is good if Hailey felt good enough to take a nap during all that chaos. Way to go Hailey.

  21. Oh Lee, I do understand how annoying it can be when a baby cries. I'm not a big fan of children myself but I tolerate mom's granddaughter. She's two and the best thing I can say about her is she will share her food with me, the worst thing is I don't like her touching me. Mom makes me let her pet me, ugh.

    Aroo to you,
    Sully

  23. I know that kind of stress, and I'm so happy that it ended up going well for Hailey and Maggie! Shyla is afraid of young children but has come to like our nephews. I hope that the same happens for Hailey.
