How Hailey Made Friends with a 4 year old

Hailey doesn't like little kids. When they come to her (we all know it is hers not our) house, she barks and barks and barks. For kids who aren't use to dogs, this can be scary. My BFF has pretty dog savy kids (they live with 2 themselves) who were able to be coached (for the most part) on acting in a less stressful way around Hailey. She wasn't bothered much by the 10 and 7 year old, it was the 4 year old who freaked her out the most. His mom called him the squeaky toy, as his normal mode is to run and squeak!

As the afternoon went on, Hailey learned 4 year olds aren't too bad - they will generously share their chips!

After this, she was much better with him!

In the evening, when the fireworks were going off, she even turned to the 10 year old for comfort!

Lessons she learned:
Kids with food are good
Kids are better than fireworks

  1. it is hard if the dogs are not around kids - my boys have never had a lot of contact with kids....Reilly is fine - he pretty much ignores everyone and gets along with everyone - denny is terrified of anyone new - and he certainly wouldn't take food from a stranger - no matter how yummy

  2. Ah, so good. It's really hard to get used to kids, if they scare you! That's so great you got to spend time with understanding kids who were gentle with you!

  4. Yeah, kids can be a little hairy for dogs who aren't used to them. I don't blame them, they are scary for adults who aren't used to them!

  7. Oh yes I do love the little ones. For some reason they are always dropping foodables. I think they must like me a lot, because they do it around me all the time.

  8. Kids also drop food, or walk around with it in their hands hanging close to the floor. Therefore our dogs love them and love to follow them around! I'm pretty sure they wish we had some kids of our own. LOL

  9. We love little people and try to molest every one we see when we are out of the house. Our pawrents try to keep us as quiet as possible when we greet the ones that want to say hi and we like to sneak a kiss or two on the cheek if we can. We don't have any friends with little people.

  12. Oh good for her! Nico doesn't like little kids either, before I had gotten them he was "mistreated" by a 3 year old (he didn't know any better obviously) but Nico got his tail yanked by the little boy multiple times. So whenever Nico sees a little kid, he's like: "HELP! Please! Somebody call animal control!" LOL.

  13. How wonderful for your girl!!!! Our girl Sheba who is 9 years old, can't be around children at all--We've never had any kids around to help her through her fear of them, so I just have to keep her away from them. Easy for us to do, but it's much better when you can do it as you have!

  14. Our Kendra hated everyone, but it was amazing what some cheese would do to help relationships. So glad that your friend could prime her kids to cooperate to make Hailey feel safer.

  19. I am so happy to read this!!! Shyla used to be afraid of all children under about 12. My nephews were her first breakthrough. We coached them exhaustively before their first time meeting her. By now, she adores them - although if they stay longer than about 3 hours, she seeks the solitude of our bedroom for a snooze.

    Way to go Hailey!

  21. Yep, my huskies just LOVE my 3 year old when she has a snack, they know she will always either share, or drop a whole bunch!! hahaha! We call them our own personal vacuum cleaners.
Now, if they would only vacuum up their fur! BOL!

  22. I do not care for sticky little people who are inclined to be all grabby hands at my beautiful furs. I find it best to deal with them by spending a few hours Under the Bed until they have gone away again. But food? Well, food is good.

  23. I love to hear this! It gives me hope that Rita might eventually learn to be okay w/ strange men in the house! We've actually never had little kids in the house (other than a baby) so I'm not even sure how she'd do with them! She's been okay with the ones we met out on walks, but in the house might be different.
