Hailey's big adventure

"Where are we going?"
On Monday, Hailey had the worst day of her life, a great adventure.  It started at 8 am when I snuck her into the car, leaving a crying Phod at home alone. A very anxious girl, nearly hyperventilated her one hour ride to location 1. Location 1 was day camp. I admit it broke my heart to leave my terrified girl at camp. When I picked her up a little bit after 5, she was ecstatic to see me. She apparently had a great day there. They put her in the room with the little dogs (which would likely be less scary for her) and she watched and did play with one dog.

The reason Lee had to spend the day at camp was because it was time for her annual check up. To make my life easiest as our vet is in the city and on the way home, she spent the day there. [There are vets closer to where we live, who I am sure are awesome, but we go to our friend and trusted vet].

We got to the clinic a little early (and then the vet was running a little late) and had to wait. Lee was very stressed but it gave us lots of time to practice her relax posed. While waiting another client came over and did Reiki or something on Lee without asking. I was slightly annoyed but decided not to pick a fight and Lee handled it like a champ, just staring at me. The client also gave a lot of advice on things I could be doing for my dog, I smiled and thanked her.
Practicing relaxed

Finally it was our turn. Hailey quickly settled down once we were in the exam room. Our vet Woody, sat on the floor and examined her, so she didn't have the trauma of being on the table.

Hailey's weight: 38 lbs (17.6 kg). This is within her ideal body weight range and she looks perfect. I am especially proud of this given how terrible our winter was and how our exercise was less.
Teeth: Fantastic (reinforcing my slacking on the brushing lately)
Overall health: Perfect!
She handled her shots like a champ.

Overall, she did very well. I put her in the car while I waited for her and Phod's heart worm, the cats food and to pay the bill. I was glad because our clinic is an emergency clinic and a couple brought in their dying cat which caused some chaos (and with Lee already being stressed I don't know if that would have helped). She slept all the way home

She came home (around 8 pm), had a little dinner (she got lots of treats at the clinic) and slept and slept. It was a big day for her. On Tuesday, while I was getting ready for work, she hid. I think she was afraid I was going to take her away. She has been fine since, so she has forgiven me!

Phod's turn will be in July!

  1. Hailey, I'm glad you got only good news from the vet. ( I always fear a situation like you had with the poor cat when I visit the vet). If we drive with Easy to the vet then the car is "evil" for the next weeks and it needs a lot of time till he will enter the car again :o)

  2. LOL they are not stupid are they? Love the way Lee hid. We are lucky our vet is on top of our road so we can walk there in two minutes. That was a God send with Ancient Pip.
    Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. OMD Hailey... we have always wanted to go to Camp Hunch a Bunch. We have heard super stories about all the FUN (once the PAWrents are GONE) that everybuddy has there.
Sorry that you had to do the DOGTOR thingy after such a super Adventure day. THEY always have to Spoil the FUN, don't they?

  4. Hey Hailey!
Wow, great job putting up with all of that! I bet you actually had fun at camp, it's just a little nerve-wracking at first.

  6. We don't have those camps here in Iowa, we just load up go to the frankenvet and come back home. We hates it. Hailey you did a swell job little girl, and got such a good report!!! Isn't it funny how others think they know what is better for you than your own momma does (that lady at the vet)......bahahhaha.....hugs.

  7. Dogs can be funny....Reilly absolutely loves going to the vets - he thinks it is such a treat which is amazing considering and the shots and such he gets there. Denny of coarse is terrified of the vets but he has the attitude of get me in and out as fast you can and all if fine :)

  12. Oh, man - that is BIG day! Unsolicited Reiki... that's odd! But I'd be the same - unless the person was stressing Rita out I wouldn't say anything. Just nod, smile... and then move away at the earliest opportunity! :) Glad she did well and got a good checkup! (You've reminded me I need to brush Rita's teeth! I'm a terrible slacker there too - but she gets a lot of antlers and chews...)

  17. What a full day-first daycare(so glad she had a good time there)and then to the Vets. Sounds like she behaved perfectly. Hunter hasn't been to a daycare and probably won't. His timid personality makes him a target for Alpha dogs. He is really scared when he goes to the vet and also to the groomer. When I arrive to pick him up at the groomers, he is calm. In fact, tomorrow he goes in to get his cut.
    Have a great night.

  18. Haha, your mom is funny she said you had the worst day of you life then scratched it out and called it a "great adventure".....she is very clever. Glad you got an A+ report on your health.

    Aroo to you,

  19. Wow, what a day for Lee, but it sounds like she handled it! I cannot believe the Reiki and know-it-all woman. I never truly noticed how much people invade a dog's space until I experienced living with Shyla. She might've had cardiac arrest if that woman had done that to her. I admire your self control! I tend to get a little bossy when people start trying to mess with Shyla without my permission :)

Way to go Lee! And A+ on your health report card!

  20. I can't believe a client wanted to give you advice - she clearly wasn't the dog-tor who really does know everything! I'm happy to hear you are in tip-top shape and that you don't need to have your teeth cleaned. I hope you had a lot of treats when you got home!

  21. So glad everyone survived the vet visit! It's never easy - we have to sneak up on Sam to capture him and get him into the car - he HATES being in the car. That's actually the only tough time because he's great at the vets and in the waiting room. Anyway, glad to hear Hailey had a good checkup and all is well!

    Hugs, Pam and Sam

  22. My kitty, Morgan, has lost some weight lately so I want to make sure he's okay. I took him in for bloodwork a couple weeks ago and somehow got him in the carrier. I was supposed to take him in for a urinalysis last week but he took off under the bed as soon as he saw the carrier so I had to cancel the appointment. I took him in yesterday in a soft carrier and we'll find out today what's up (apparently his sugar was a bit high).

  23. Poor girl was exhausted after such a long day. We had a vet visit this week too and we all went together. It was quite crazy.

  24. We are lucky we have a trusted vet close by, but if we didn't, I would certainly travel further and arrange the schedule to be able to go to one I did trust. Glad it all went well (other than the weird Reiki lady)!
