Mischief Monday - "Deaf" Dog

Hailey and I have been butting heads so to speak for the past few weeks. Normally, she gets to be outside on her tie out, not tied to anything and she stays in the yard. However, starting just before we went on holidays she decided to explore the world more without me. When I call her back, she apparently is deaf. She doesn't flinch and continues on her way. Now getting her back is a challenge in the winter because I end up sinking to my thighs in the deep snow as I try to get her. She has never gotten further then the neighbours (as she is also slowed down by the deep snow) but it is still annoying. What makes it extra annoying is that she doesn't do this with the Man.

It is challenging to work on recall because most days I am not home during daily light hours (or very limited day light hours) and work day mornings need big walks etc. Also, we have many days it is just too cold to work on outside. It is my goal once we get back into the routine of life and I get caught up with work (the draw back to being self-employed) but we will be spending extra time working on this.

In the meantime, while outside with me, she has to be on her leash.

  2. Ahhhh - she is testing her place in the pack - she sees Man as the alpha dog and she is testing where she is and trying to move above you

  5. WELL Guess What we nevers listens to our mom either, and gussie went to puppy school.\!! As soon as hers puts us outside we put those ear plugs in our ears and would just take off down the road, and cause our mom to have several heart attacks, sooooo that is why we have Alcatraz and mean ole cat dietzy as our prison guard. He is relentless. Now when we want to go for a nice walk, we must wear our harness and leash. We love them tho so it is okay with us. We also have not gotten to go on walks cos of the weather, we are all so ready for spring.

  6. I think we are siblings Hailey. I sometimes have tons of beans in my ears too. And like you I have to stay on the leash when we are outside. But I see it my way: I use the leash to walk my staff :o)

  7. Uh oh, bad puppy! Lol
Yea I ALWAYS have to have my pack on leashes and ties and whatnot when their out, huskies are notorious escape artists, and I learned that the hard way for sure!!! When I only had one husky (mika) she was good for a couple weeks when I would let her out with no leash but all the sudden one day she took off.....I tried again she took off again, so I quickly put a stop to that while working on recall also. I don't risk it anymore after realizes that this is a major husky trait!!
Good luck with your recall, and catching up on your work!

  8. Dakota has a wonderful knack of "playing deaf" too.......the leash is a great idea though!

  9. Bella runs off every time she's let off the lead. She ignores any calling or whistling and returns in her own sweet time. VERY frustrating. So she's not let off the lead. SHE understands your frustration.

  11. Hey, how about putting her in a box and shipping her Fed Ex to us, we can teach her, and trust us, she won't want to go walkies after running with us for a couple of weeks!

  12. Mom says I listen better since I got my haircut. Doesn't make sense, huh? Thank you for the wonderful Birfday card! We loved it!

  13. It's not pack behavior like someone said. ;) That theory's been debunked for years now.

For her, exploring is more reinforcing than you. Have you tried rewarding her for coming to you in the house, or just being near you?

  15. Hope you can get to the bottom of this! You can practice calling her and rewarding her on your normal leash. We do it all the time in class so our dogs know that coming to us when we call them results in lots of treats!

  16. Hmm, maybe make recall more enticing, like rewarding Hailey with an extremely high value treat every time she comes when she's called?

Thankfully, Beamer comes running towards me once I pretend to start running away. He doesn't want to be left alone.

  17. Boomer has selective hearing and can be such a brat, for lack of a better word. He will actually look at you when you call him and then go back to what he's doing. Just the other day when I tried to get him back he completely ignored me so I packed some snow in my hand and started throwing snow balls around the yard to get his attention. He finally came but wow, that was a lot of work!

  18. We call that selective hearing too. Usually, shaking a box of cookies does the trick. Unless there is a squirrel or something really wonderful out there! Thank goodness we have a fenced yard, the only way to go, with Airedales!

  20. Hi hi hi! Ojo here! Lee, you gotta listen to your person, friend! Or else off-leash-fun gets taken away! (I know this from experience, and trust me, it sucks!) Although, I must admit, sometimes I cannot help myself! Yesterday I found a dead deer. Can you blame me for not listening to my person???

  21. Does she know you are just investigating? Treats are always worth unplugging my ears ;-)
