The pups do play.
Highlights from my time away:
1 dead frog baby (damaged beyond repair)
1 baby needs surgery
Leelee survived her first bath (but this was followed by the death of a baby)
And the big one:
Lee finally got a squirrel. Can't be sure if she found it dead or if she was responsible for the death because she got it in the bush. She didn't come when called and when approached in the woods just stood ther with it. She did drop it on command (which is very exciting and I won't go into all the behavioural reasons as I know not everyone spent a weekend in heaven with behavior analysts). We do worry that now that she got one her listening at the park will decrease.
BOth were very happy to see me and the blog will return to a daily report.

Another embarrassing moment
I got myself dressed for work and then took LeeLee out for a walk (Gemi is feeling under the weather this morning). This meant I looked a little bit ridiculous in my skirt, walking sandals, and purse I need to carry my stuff. But I am ok with this. Of course, today would be the day that the police were investigating something to do with cars right up the street. This very handsome police officer was photographing the cars. Lee did not like this and was barking a lot at this officer. He put the camera down, looked up, smiled and laughed. I smiled and kept walking. Oh Lee!

An embarrassing moment
On a beautiful sunny day on a long weekend I used the excuse of a good cause to convince my husband that we needed to drive across the city to a dog park. Hopeful Hearts (a wonderful dog rescue that I did research when looking for Hailey, but in the end we found Lee at another wonderful rescue Catahoula rescue) was holding an event at Bruce Pit. I have always wanted to go there, and thought this was a great time to take the 30 minute drive.
The dogs did not love being in the car. They whined a bit, but they loved the Pit. We started with a walk. It was a very nice day and they were both so good running and playing.
After they had a good run, we stopped by the Phodographer’s for a picture. There is going to be an amazing picture of the 2 of them, I will post it when I get it. Then we thought we would get Lee’s nails cut.
This is when I was embarrassed. Lee screamed like someone was trying to set her on fire. People were staring. Gemi was trying to figure out what the heck her problem was. They could barely hold her down at times (and it was 2 vet techs doing this, not just people like me). In the end after much trial and error, they got all but 4 cut, which was better then I thought they might. My girl does not like girlie things! I guess I am going to have to use my behaviour analytic skills to desensitize her to these sorts of things. (I thought my dogs were my break from work and not another project!)

Hungry or concerned about lip care?
When asked why she went upstairs and got the lippy from the bedside table, brought it downstairs and ate it, Lee said "I needed a snack. It smells so good when the Lady puts it on, I try to lick it off. If my people fed me more I would not need to do this type of thing!"

I don't like that show!
The other evening, Miss Cricket used her head to change the TV channel. Apparently she does not enjoy the Cleveland Show and would rather watch UFC. (Perhaps all this UFC is where she is learning her new rough play with others!)

Time Out
This is a picture of the aftermath of a vicious attack that took place in Ottawa.
On a rainy afternoon, Bagheera the cat (not pictured here) came up from the basement to get some love. He was sitting nicely beside the Man, purring away. This is when the Evil cat getting Gemi attacked. She grabbed ahold of Baggy and wouldn't let go. Baggy started to scream. The Man tried to pry Miss Crick off. In the end the man ended up being scratched by Baggy. Baggy was not physically injured in the attack.
Once Baggy was free, Miss Crick was placed in time out. She sat there for the 5 minutes she was in it and didn't even try to escape. It doesn't show up in the picture, but her mouth was full of black cat hair. Miss Hailey Bug would like to point out for once she was not involved in the badness in the house. While she was in the room, she was just an innocent by stander.

New Evidence
As reported yesterday, Cinder, aka Nin had been wanted by authorities for questioning regarding a new rash of body parts being found in an Ottawa home. Upon seeing his mug shot in the paper, Nin immediately contacted authorities. He said he had been collecting evidence for the police regarding these incidents. Nin said he had been collecting this because he was being tired blamed for everything. He also said he is tired of being the victim of unwanted sexual advances.
After receiving these seemingly incriminating pictures, the police brought Miss Hailey Bug and Miss Gemini Cricket in for further questioning. Their comments are below. The investigation to uncover the truth is ongoing.
Gemi: "This is an approved chiro technique. I am a student in the field, and Frog had consented." |
Lee: "I am a licensed plastic surgeon. Frog had contacted me for eye reduction surgery. I was doing an assessment for this." |

I can’t wait until your kids do that to you
Parents always hope that the bad things their kids do, come back to haunt when their children have children. While I do not have human children (I am very happy with my hairy pack), I had a flash of this today with my Lee.
My parents tell this semi-embarrassing story about me when I was 3. After repeated requests to stop picking all the flowers from the garden, I continued to do so. It was 1 of the 2 times in my childhood I was spanked. (I have no memory of this, so apparently this was not too devastating).
Today, I heard the man yelling “no, no, no, don’t eat the tulips.” It took a lot to get Hailey to stop de-heading and trying to eat the tulips. The garden now has a lot of green and all the colour is missing.
I guess what goes around, does come around!

New Best Friend
LeeLee has a best friend at the park, Jake. She and Jake had a wonderful time playing at the park. They played and wrestled and it was great. Prior to Jake's arrival, LeeLee had tried to get Gemi to play with her. Like always, Gemi just ignored her. Then Jake and LeeLee were playing. Gemi tried to play too. She was barking and going over but Jake and Lee were ignoring her. Finally she had enough and she jumped on Jake and humped the crap out of him. She was doing her nasty, rough hump. It was really embarrassing and she had to be physically removed. Jake's people took him away. Poor Lee, her friend went away. She quickly recovered as we went for a walk.

Remember Loki
May 12, will be 1 year since we said good bye to our beloved Loki. I miss him every day, but I am finding as time goes by I can celebrate his life and the joy he brought us (and his urn continues to bring us), more than the sadness of his death.
Loki and I had a song. He joined our pack in December and at the time he couldn't be free in our yard. He and I spent hours standing on the corner by the gas station, especially at night, watching the world go by (and waiting for him to pee). During this time, to keep my sanity, I started singing to him. The song that kept popping in my head in the middle of the night was Matchbox Twenty's, The Difference. The first 2 lines of the song are: "Slow walking on the boulevard, in the quiet moments while the city's still dark." These lines just seemed appropriate and it stuck. I sang this song to him through his life and a lot through his illness, and right before he died. In many ways it has become a very appropriate song for him because it is about losing love. When I hear it now, it makes me smile and sigh.
I can't figure out how to put a youtube video in this post, so here is a link to the song being performed by my "boyfriend:" (Yes I have a little crush on Rob Thomas) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PoSKIB4D-0
Loki - if there is an afterlife, I hope you spend your days chasing bunnies and humping cats.

A walk to remember
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon the girls, Aunt C and the Lady joined about 100 dogs for the Hopeful Hearts first annual Happy Tails fundraising walk. Hopeful Hearts is a local rescue that specializes in senior and pallative dogs. They raised over $7000. Here are some highlights for the 2.5 hour event:

Dogs from around the world
This is my friend Hugo. Even though I hadn't seen him in 3 years, he clearly remembered me and remembered what a good belly scratch I gave as he kept bugging me for them! |
Bali is full of dogs (that look stray but may actually be pets). Everyone has one. They are all about the size of Lee. It made me miss my girl! |

Rain, Rain, Go away
Not because I don't like walking in the rain or am bothered by getting wet. It is because I am tired of wiping muddy puppy paws! Thank goodness we don't have carpet any more.

A good role model?
One of my friend’s ,Cathy, asked if she could bring her son over to be around my dogs as he has developed a fear of them. Besides, coming to my house is cheaper than going to a petting zoo!
Gemi and Nin were great. Lee, maybe wasn’t the best role model. Not because she was aggressive or anything but because she barked and barked and barked and it was very loud!
I am not sure Graeme likes dogs any better!

A New Toy Box
The box and our paw towel |
As I have entered my mid-30s and have not been a student for nearly 4 years (which after 15 years of post secondary education is a life time) and I have a career (meaning I actually make more money than I need to pay tuition), it has been my goal to slowly create a more adult home.
Another step was taken this week when I replaced a white plastic laundry basket with a new toy box.
We will see how long this lasts. Miss Bug saw me take toys from it and then was trying to get into it! Maybe she will forget!

A nice spring day
Between rain showers we had a beautiful day. The pups and I took some time to play in the backyard.
I remember a time I had grass and not as many holes in the yard. I wonder if that will ever happen again as the owner of a Hailey Bug.
LeeLee outside with a toy I said she could take out, beside one of her holes. |
